Rosario Maria 07 gen 2008 - 17:57 - #29 -2 punti ciao a tutti! A $12.3 million research project to capture and store carbon by growing tules and cattails in wetlands launched by the U.S. Geological Survey this summer has already shown some promising results, according to Environmental Science & Technology's Janet Pelley: The USGS project has captured eye-popping amounts of carbon—an average of 3000 grams of carbon per square meter per year (g-C/m2/yr) over the past 5 years. For comparison, reforested agricultural land, eligible for carbon credits under the Kyoto Protocol on climate change, socks away carbon at a rate much less than 100 g-C/m2/yr, says Gail Chmura, a biogeochemist at McGill University (Canada). You are probably expecting to see a wet noodle taken to CEOs of the chemicals industry and some blows to Walmart. But the truth is much more complicated. In fact, the chemical industry CEOs have led some of the greatest advances in green. And although greed may have been one driving factor, many issues subtly play into putting the chemical industry in a leadership position. Greed? Your brain hits the pause button. What is greedy about green? The chemical industry may have begrudgingly entered into waste minimization. But that was decades ago. Spurred by government programs like the toxic release inventory (TRI) reporting, which gave the public information on how many tons of waste were flooding the environment and which companies were the biggest polluters, the industry had to act. And guess what? Pretty soon waste reduction and minimization was being sold to boards everywhere as a cost-saving measure. Product that had been spilled into rivers or pumped underground was suddenly being sold for profit. And the industry survived. And thrived. Sustainability became a common word in board rooms, environmental planning became intrinsic in business planning. So how about Walmart? Whether driven by the heated breath of activists on their necks, experience gained from the field of employee relations or simply surfing a trend that consumers embrace, Walmart has begun to use their huge purchasing power and overwhelming infrastructure for green leadership. No, these two boogie-corporations are not on the list of begrudgingly green CEOs. So just who did make the list? Hidden Reservoir: Why Water Efficiency Is The Best Solution For The Southeast by Rebecca Wodder, American Rivers on 10.22.08 Business & Politics Imagine, if you will, that a brand new source of water is suddenly discovered in the Southeast. A big aquifer, perhaps, or a giant lake. A new water source that could quench the thirst of millions. You're probably thinking this sounds like a “too good to be true” dream in a region suffering from record drought. Today, American Rivers is releasing a new report, Hidden Reservoir: why water efficiency is the best solution for the Southeast. Water efficiency is proven, it is cost-effective, and the results are immediate. But it's not a dream, it's reality -- Atlanta and the entire Southeast are sitting on an enormous and forgotten water supply, and it's hiding in plain sight -- there is a "hidden reservoir" in our laundry rooms, our kitchens and bathrooms. Now, let's be clear: water efficiency does not mean telling people to shower just once a week, or to plant a cactus in their front yards. Water efficiency does not mean turning the water off. It’s not about water use restrictions – because that just brings temporary results. Halloween went from being a sweet personal indulgence to a depressingly, somber affair. Whether your concern is your own personal health, the health of the planet, or that of your little goblin sugar-mongers—or all of the above—take a holistic approach this Halloween (and still bask in indulgent fun) by handing out organic, fair trade, and intelligently packaged candy. The significance of a vehicle that spits water out of its exhaust instead of carbon is lost on virtually nobody, and it looks like Honda will be the first out of the gate. Honda has created a clever commercial to show how important its new accomplishment is, and it involves a bunch of thugs shooting it out with water guns. It's good stuff, and you can view it by clicking the read link below. This car at THIS time is more of an advertising plot rather than anything else. Fuel cell powered cars or other hydrogen powered vehicles are of no consequence as long as there is no reasonable infrastructure to obtain the necessary hydrogen to run the cars. Besides, as far as leasing a hydrogen powered car, didn't BMW beat Honda to it? NeutralHooper @ Nov 18th 2007 2:15PMIt's not the first hydrogen-fueled motor vehicle made available to consumers, but it is the first fuel-cell-powered vehicle to be made available to consumers. NeutralHooper @ Nov 18th 2007 2:18PMWhoops! I forgot about that GM fuel-cell-powered SUV, so it's not the first of that kind, either. NeutralTemple @ Nov 19th 2007 12:58AMHonda had the previous FCX available for lease as well; which was actually the first back in 2002 (concept dating back to 1999). GM did the hydrogen Sequel, Ford had the Focus, and BMW the hydrogen 7 for lease a over a year ago. However, this new FX clarity isn't just another leased prototype. You won't have a engineer follow you around and the lease is going to be more then just a few handful of people. the scale is significantly different then previous efforts. NeutralSpaceweasel @ Nov 18th 2007 12:40PMThis ad cracked me up. It looks like they had a ton of fun making it.Reply NeutralJDP @ Nov 18th 2007 1:23PMForgive me if i'm wrong, but isn't "clean water vapor" actually the world's most prevalent greenhouse gas? It is, according to my environmental studies textbook.Reply Neutrallintsniffer @ Nov 18th 2007 1:48PMWow, we have a winner.Maybe you could lend your textbook to the UN council on climate change? NeutralHooper @ Nov 18th 2007 2:28PMBut, I presume, the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere has remained more or less constant for God knows how long (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_cycle — I wonder how the potential adoption of hydrogen-fueled vehicles in mass quantities might affect the climate, though). On the other hand, the carbon in the carbon dioxide generated by humankind's activities comes from underground and doesn't get returned there. NeutralSamurai Jack @ Nov 18th 2007 2:32PMYup, you're right. Of course this isn't a difficult problem to solve. Simply contain the water vapor long enough for it to cool a few degrees. Liquid water is much less of a problem--unless you're on the motorcycle behind the fuel cell powered lorry. Neutralwhy not the LS2LS7? @ Nov 18th 2007 6:59PMWater vapor isn't necessarily warm. You're thinking of steam. Steam is invisible. Water vapor is visible and is liquid water suspended in air.Surely you've gone outside on a foggy day and seen cold water vapor all around you?H20 is a huge greenhouse gas, but I don't know if it's any more dangerous than CO2 from renewable sources (or cow farts). H2O cycles around throughout the year, we aren't unlocking new H2O from the crust. NeutralTurbofrog @ Nov 18th 2007 7:25PMThere's no reason to be concerned about the water vapour emitted, at least not compared to existing engine emissions, which already contain H20 as one of the combustion products.1 C8H18 + 25 O2= 8 CO2 + 9 H2O is the combustion reaction for octane. Neutralnonsense @ Nov 18th 2007 7:51PMAdding water vapor to the atmosphere is completely harmless. We have a lovely mechanism know as rain which keeps the concentration of water vapor in the atmosphere in check. CO2 doesn't just precipitate out when it reaches a high enough concentration. Neutralkundo @ Nov 18th 2007 10:30PMYes. it is the most PREVALENT greenhouse gas. What's your point? Prevalence doesn't equal harmful, it just means there's a lot of it. CO2 is harmful to the environment and causes heat retention. Water vapor is what clouds are made of. Then the clouds return water to the earth's surface. Do only 3 year olds and conspiracy theorists read autoblog? Neutralsw @ Nov 18th 2007 10:37PMHaha, wonder if your textbook also has something on "Rain" NeutralReality Check @ Nov 18th 2007 1:32PMFuel-cell cars get Hydrogen from fossil energy so the CO2 that it isn't produced from the tail pipe is just released during the conversion. Untill they produce Hydrogen from wind, solar, or nuclear power plants through electic conversion we are just fooling ourselves. But it will be a perfect power source once they do use renewable energy to produce it. And we are only a few nuclear plants away from gas that we import. Just think of the money that we would have in our country if we did produce all of our own energy.Reply Neutralporschedevotee @ Nov 18th 2007 5:41PMThey are putting in hydrogen stations which receive their hydrogen from renewable sources. It was on AutoblogGreen:http://www.autobloggreen.com/2007/11/15/shell-installs-a-hydrogen-fuel-station-in-white-plains/It would be nice if more people realized that plug-ins and hydrogen cars have a wide variety of fuel sources available. If you're using a gas or diesel powered car, there's really only one way to get it, and it's a finite amount. It's not like we'll run out of sunshine or wind anytime soon... score one for the renewables! :) Neutralwwhit710 @ Nov 18th 2007 2:16PMSorry, but this is no where NEAR the first leased fuel cell vehicle on the market. While this following link may or may not represent the first, it certainly predates the one listed in your article.http://www.motortrend.com/features/auto_news/112_news051028_ford_focusReply NeutralSean Flanagan @ Nov 19th 2007 9:43AMFTA: "Area residents will notice the Focus Fuel Cell vehicles in their neighborhoods as city employees drive the vehicles for city business or, in Taylor , as the water department travels to read meters."City employees do not the public make. This is the first fuel cell vehicle available for the average Joe to lease. All previous fuel cell vehicles on public roads were either part of a testing program, offered by invitation only, part of a fleet, or a combination thereof. Neutralwwhit710 @ Nov 19th 2007 12:45PM$600 per month lease, with all included repair costs, does not make it available to the "average joe" either. The only difference between the two, other than 3 years later, is how it is being marketed.Go ahead and believe this is anything more than a technology test if you would like. But you would be wrong. | 1 | 2 | Most Recent | Next 20 Comments Breaking News<img border="1" align="left" width="50" height="50" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/powerdome_lead_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Latest teaser previews 2010 Ford Mustang "power dome" hood" />Latest teaser previews 2010 Ford Mustang "power dome" hoodSpy Shots: Mazdaspeed 3 spotted at the 'RingNissan makes offer for 20% of Chrysler2008 LA Design Challenge releases full field of contendersCadillac prices 2009 CTS-V from $59,995 Featured StoriesKnight Rider: The Liveblog -- Season 1, Episode 5Driven: 2009 Tesla Roadster v1.5First Drive: 2009 Infiniti G37x Coupe and G37S SedanFirst Drive: 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S with PDKParade Laps at the Chinese Grand Prix [SPOILER ALERT] Autoblog Features Featured Galleries<img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/2643430_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="BMW M1 "ProCar" on eBay" width="75" height="75" title="BMW M1 "ProCar" on eBay">? Monday, July 07, 2008 12:40 Following news that Toyota is considering solar panels for an upcoming Toyota Prius model, Car and Driver today posted illustrations of the all-new 2010 Toyota Prius. If the pictures in fact resemble the 2010 Prius, we can expect the car to keep its egg-shape but look much more upscale than the current model.?Car and Driver believes that the car will be more efficient than the current Prius generation, which is EPA rated at 48 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway. Also, expect the car to be slightly more expensive than the current Prius with prices starting at about $23,000 for the base model and topping $30,000 for a loaded model with navigation system and leather interior. You can read the Car and Driver article here. This is because search engines can't read images like a person can. To them, an image with text is just an image. They really have no idea what the image is or if, in fact, it says anything at all. So when optimizing sites, anytime we are dealing with keyword optimized content, we want to make sure it's standard HTML text. This includes headers, benefit lits, and even normal body copy. While the search engines can't read actual images, they can read what we say about the image. This information can be gleaned a few different ways: Image file name (image1234.jpg vs. mustang-gt.jpg) Text immediately surrounding the image The overall content of the page the image is on Image ALT attribute in the image tag When trying to optimize images for image search, all of these can provide important indicators the search engines use to produce the best set of image results. In terms of traditional optimization and website usability, the ALT attribute plays an important role. The ALT attribute is an image descriptor The ALT attribute should by no means be considered a substitute for regular text. ALT text doesn't get weighted as heavily as body text so relying on it as a replacement for body text is like entering a Prius into the Indy 500. It doesn't have a chance. Ok, so that was a bit of an exaggeration, but you get my point. There are effective uses of the Image ALT attribute when it comes to SEO and usability. Let's start by looking at an image tag with the ALT attribute: <img src="images/image.jpg" alt="This is the ALT attribute" /> Almost universally, you should be using ALT text to describe each of your images. I say "almost" because if you are still using clear images for formatting, styling, or spacing (you shouldn't be!) then those images don't need any description. As a side note, if you want your HTML to validate properly then every image needs an ALT attribute, even if it's left empty: <img src="images/spacer.gif" alt="" /> In some cases, the ALT text can act as a replacement for the text in an image, such as a company name, tagline or some kind of special promotion, and in other cases the ALT text should actually describe the image. In either case, if the image contains text, then you will almost always want to put it in the ALT attribute as well. For example, the logo in my company site is really nothing more than just the words "Pole Position Marketing" with my tagline. I could go a couple of different ways with the the construction of the ALT attribute, depending on the context of how it's used. Here, since I'm using the image as an example, it's not important for me to use much more than a basic description: alt="Pole Position Marketing logo and tagline" But on my own website, since this isn't jut an image in the body copy, but one of my key site indicators, I produce a much more complete description: alt="Pole Position Marketing: Velocitize Your Website Marketing" Now, if I wanted to be even more descriptive, and more accurate, I'd write my alt tag this way: alt="Pole Position Marketing logo: Velocitize Your Website Marketing" Again, I let the context be the guide for what I write in my ALT text. If the reader, with images turned off, won't know that the image is a logo then I'd add that to the description. But since this image appears repeatedly at the top of the page, in the typical place that logos and/or other site indicators go, then I really don't need the additional description. Describe your image meaning Let's look at another example. Here is an screenshot of an image-heavy home page: Now, when we look at this same page with the images turned off you can see how that by not using any image ALT attributes the site becomes unnavigable. The only place you can see any ALT text is in the logo, which reads "Super 8 Taos". The rest of the site is just a big jumble of images, some of them links and some not. [Note: you can mouse over any of the images on this page to check out my ALT text usage for each.] As you can see above, ALT text becomes even more important when navigating a site with images turned off when the navigation is all image based. Let's add some ALT text to these images and see what we get: The header and navigation are pretty obvious. Here we simply added the same words that are in the image. Again, since this is obviously navigation we really don't need to describe the images, so much as just reiterate what they say. This allows the visitor to know where each link will take them, just as if images were turned on. You can see that I didn't bother adding ALT text to any images that didn't serve a function beyond eye-candy. There really is no reason to attempt to describe them in any way, so in these cases I would just add an empty ALT attribute, as shown above, just so the code will validate. In the center area I got a bit creative with my ALT text. Even for less image-heavy websites, this is a great example of how to use ALT attributes for images that attempt to convey meaning without words. We could attempt to describe the pictures perfectly by saying something like, Picture of our room, picture of the bay, picture of downhill skier. While those are accurate descriptions they don't convey the intended meaning that you get when you actually see the image. So in this case we'll use the ALT attribute to try and get some of that intended meaning across: alt="All of our rooms are comfortable and spacious with living room seating and ceiling fans." alt="You can reserve a suite featuring breathtaking ocean views." alt="We are only minutes from some of the worlds best ski resorts." With images like this you can get a bit more or less flowery, depending on your needs. It also makes it easier to work keywords into the ALT text without looking junky. Instead of just throwing a keyword in every image, describe the image a bit and work the keyword in naturally. Just like you would with body text. Considerations for SEO and usability It's easy when SEOing a website to just throw a quick word or two into your alt images, but that's a mistake. Even in your navigation the ALT text can be used to expand on a links meaning when there is not enough image space to do so. For example if the image reads "About Us" the ALT attribute can say "Learn more about our company." If the image reads "Accommodations" the ALT text can read "Deluxe accommodations." If your image reads "FAQs" then the ALT text can spell it out with "Frequently asked Questions." When dealing with navigation you want to be careful about how many words you use. Too much and you lose the ability to be effective, especially with quick scans. Always check what your page looks like with images turned off, ensuring that your ALT tags flow well with the rest of the site design. On my site I edited my ALT attributes specifically to provide better usability with images turned off. Here is what my site's top navigation looks like with images: The drop downs are all absolutely positioned so if I had made any of these ALT descriptions longer then the drop downs would have been been misaligned. By editing my ALT text properly, we keep proper alignment. Just to provide one more example of good ALT attribute usage, I've added ALT text to the Better Business Bureau logo on our site. Instead of just saying "BBB Accredited Business" I added a more lengthy description that reads: alt="We are a Better Business Bureau accredited business. Click here to check our BBB rating." This text much more valuable to the reader that has images turned off. I should also note that Internet Explorer will display the ALT attribute when you mouseover an image. FireFox, on the other hand will only display text that is in the image's title attribute. If you are adding great descriptive text in your ALT attribute as I have shown here then it's probably a good idea to also place that text in a title as well. • Next Prius could include optional "symbolic" solar panels - Boing Boing Gadgets Boing Boing Home Gadgets TV Suggest a Link Archives Merchandise Subscribe Mark Cory David Xeni John Joel Next Prius could include optional "symbolic" solar panels Posted by Joel Johnson, July 7, 2008 6:15 AM | permalink Toyota isn't officially commenting on Reuters' report that the next generation of Prius hybrid cars will have optional solar panels on the top, a feature the story's source is calling "more of a symbolic gesture." The panels are rumored to partially power auxiliary systems like air conditioning. It's a symbolic gesture since the silicon solar panels will be fairly expensive to produce ? it will certainly take a few years before they harvest enough energy to outweigh their initial materials cost. But like the Prius itself, which is only slightly more fuel efficient than other small gas-powered vehicles (especially when you factor in things like turbo diesels), the symbolism of the gesture doesn't necessarily make it a fruitless one. Putting solar cells on the Prius, even relatively expensive or inefficient ones, will inject the notion into the mass market. As cheaper cells become more available and more physically flexible, it wouldn't be surprising to see increasing surface area dedicated to solar cells. Toyota to add solar panels to some Prius hybrids [Guardian.co.uk via Jalopnik] posted in: Green ,? Vehicles Favorite this! Send this to a Friend Older Brunopasso pod espresso machine looks like a hot rod, still takes forever Newer Chuck E. Cheese Rock-afire robots in MGMT music video Discussion Take a look at this #1 posted by icky2000 , July 7, 2008 6:55 AM I care about the environment and believe that early usage of alternative energy solutions is good because it sponsors an industry that will continue to perfect the technology. Still, I don't get the idea of injecting the notion into the mass market if it doesn't actually make sense financially or environmentally. If it is really just a symobolic gesture, isn't it a gross misuse of manufacturing potential and thereby the opposite of green? Take a look at this #2 posted by Joel Johnson , July 7, 2008 7:25 AM I think it'll still end up being carbon neutral compared to burning gasoline, but just breaking even, not exceeding. That's fine by me. Take a look at this #3 posted by szielins , July 7, 2008 7:31 AM With regards to "But like the Prius itself, which is only slightly more fuel efficient than other small gas-powered vehicles": Ah, I see the Prius has reached the third stage. (Stage one: "It's physically impossible." Stage two: "It'll never be cost-effective." Stage three: "It doesn't work as well as people say it does.") A Prius-- like any other hybrid-- does not, in fact, get significantly better mileage when going for 55 MPH for hours at a time than any other reasonably streamlined automobile with a smallish internal combustion engine. It does get significantly better mileage when it's constantly accelerating and decelerating-- as in city driving, or freeway driving with frequent slowdowns and outright traffic jams. IC engines are most efficient when running near 100% capacity; everyone's known this for decades; hybrids exploit this. It ain't rocket science. (Admitted, that's not the only source of additional efficiency-- the batteries enable storage of energy recovered from regenerative braking-- but it's the main one.) Hence, unless your daily commute is from Kansas to Iowa... Take a look at this #4 posted by Joel Johnson , July 7, 2008 7:42 AM I get your point, #3, but you're slightly missing mine: I'm not saying the Prius doesn't work as well as Toyota says it does. I'm simply saying that it's only somewhat (I avoided saying "marginally") more efficient than the small number of high-efficiency traditional internal combustion-only cars. Which is true. Doesn't make the Prius an albatross at all! Take a look at this #5 posted by Otter , July 7, 2008 7:49 AM I've always thought solar panels would be perfect for powering the venting of my car during the heat of summer. It really doesn't need to be a sauna in there all day whenever the sun is out. Take a look at this #6 posted by icky2000 , July 7, 2008 8:39 AM @2: Yeah, I'm with you. I guess my fundamental argument is that I'd prefer we encourage folks to think through their lifestyle and limit their impact on the environment where it makes most sense rather than blindly encourage folks to buy the cool Prius because it is trendy. Anyhoo, as I said above, the early adopters are inspiring an industry that can only help in the long run so that's very good. Take a look at this #7 posted by mralistair , July 7, 2008 9:54 AM one other point is that in a car weight = waste. if you are going to load up the car with heavy(?) panels you might as well buy the car and leave the panels at home where the can be oriented properly, work every hour that the sun shines and not decrease the efficiency of the vehicle. the same panels will generate more energy and the car will use no extra gas. Take a look at this #8 posted by w000t , July 7, 2008 10:18 AM Two thoughts: G Word "Nano Wires" Troy Casey leans how to have an environmentally friendly afterlife, and Joel Johnson takes us to a Canadian company growing microscopic nano wires that may be the future of solar power. 1. That was a good segment and worth catching for those interested in solar (or stalking Joel). 2. The expensive, bad-ass Fiskar already has this. Self-contained climate control through a full-length solar roof to help charge the car and provide cooling for the interior cabin while the car is parked. Take a look at this #9 posted by Joel Johnson , July 7, 2008 12:15 PM Heh, W000T. I've never seen any of my G Word segments. I'm moving and unhooked the DVR! Take a look at this #10 posted by Dillo , July 8, 2008 7:12 AM @Icky2000 #6: The problem is that most humans are not deep thinkers, nor hair-shirts so they have to be convinced that doing "the right thing" is going to be fun and sexy and not require them to do things like only eating BocaBurgers from now on. Eco-piety might work for you, me and the 3 other people on the planet like us, but everybody else needs a gateway drug... Take a look at this #11 posted by Darryl , July 8, 2008 4:22 PM @Otter: My dad bought one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Trillium-Worldwide-TWI-7001-Solar-Powered-Ventilator/dp/B0007LXTN2/ref=pd_bxgy_auto_img_b Problem: the solar cells sit *behind* the windows, so in a car with tinted windows, it doesn't work at all. Also, the motor seems pretty weak, so it didn't really seem to make a noticeable difference, although we didn't do a proper before/after analysis with a thermometer. This newer version appears to have the cells outside the window, which I suppose might work better. http://www.amazon.com/AC011106-Solar-Powered-Ventilation-System/dp/B000GTHU12/ref=pd_sim_auto_1 The other issue is that the device requires a .5" gap as it hangs over your window, so at least the version we used came with some lame plastic inserts designed to clip to the top of the window to "close the gap" around the fan, which presumably improves airflow efficiency. There's a $6 DIY version that supposedly works ok: http://www.instructables.com/id/$6-Solar-Fan/ Post a comment Name: Anonymous Email Address: Comments (you may use HTML tags for style) Don't Miss BB Video: Micachu and "maker" music, the Russell Porter interview Breaking: Apple C&D's Wired Gadget Lab over OS X-on-netbook tutorial CES: Drew Carey and Three-year-old Son Hunt for Cars, Robots (BB Video) CES Video: Asus Netbookstravaganza, with Bamboo, Gold Lamé, and Lamborghini. • Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrids Beyond Elusive Kicking Tires - Http://Blogs.Cars.Com/Kickingtires/2008/06/Toyota Prius Ho.Html
  • Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrids Beyond Elusive - KickingTires Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrids Beyond Elusive We spent a good chunk of yesterday calling car dealers nationwide trying to find a new Toyota Prius or Honda Civic Hybrid to buy. We logged quite a few phone calls — as interested buyers, mind you — and not one dealer had an actual vehicle on the lot. We recently ran our list of the fastest cars moving in and out of lots, and both ranked quite high, with the Prius and Civic Hybrid selling in 11 and 20 days, respectively. According to more than one salesman, however, they sell “before they get off the truck.” So, how do you get one of these hot sellers? Either get on a waiting list or buy used. Waiting lists for the Prius, we’re told, are roughly four to six months. The Civic Hybrid was less, at three to four months on average. Obviously your local dealer may have a different number, and if you find one that you want to share, please do so in the comments below. If you buy used, expect to pay up. Listings of used Priuses on Cars.com show models across the country — with quite a bit of mileage — going for more than their original asking price when brand new. This is almost unheard of in the automotive marketplace. We talked to one seller named Cathy in California. She’s selling a 2007 Toyota Prius with 20,000 miles on it for $32,500. She bought it a year ago for her daughter, new, for $26,200. To be fair, she got an extended warranty and maintenance packages, and the dealer gave her a $4,000 discount at the time. She’s also tinted the windows and there are four new tires. Now, her dealer can’t even get a new Prius into his dealership. Cathy has had the car listed for a few weeks and has gotten some email interest, but no takers. She plans on keeping the price in place, and even her local dealer told her not to lower her asking price. She’s just one example of dozens we found. Most cars lose 15-20% of their value during the first year of ownership, and now people selling their used Priuses are actually looking to make a profit. It’s a crazy world these days. Tell us what you think and if you’d go the waiting list or used route. Personally, we can’t wait to see the Honda CR-Z hit the streets. Posted by David Thomas on June 11, 2008 in Car Buying, Civic, Honda, Hybrids/Alternative Fuels, Prius, Toyota | Permalink | Comments (34) | TrackBack (0) Previous Post | Next Post Comments? This is completely unsurprising. I lived in the Bay Area 3 years ago when there were 1-3 month waiting lists for the Prius...with gas at $2.50 a gallon. Now it's nationwide. Gotta love the market. Posted by: LM | Jun 11, 2008 11:15:52 AM I don't get it. The car doesn't look appealing at all and there are other cars available that will provide mileage numbers that aren't that far from the Prius. My opinion is that most buyers are baffled by the hype and are ignorant when it comes to what else is available. Posted by: Bowrider | Jun 11, 2008 11:28:27 AM Toyota has a battery shortage right now and that's why there production is down. They are looking at producing the Prius in the U.S to speed up production and buying mines to get the minerals needed for the batteries. One of our local toyota dealers has several camry and hughlander hybrids. The honda dealership next to my office has one civic hybird. But then they only have 5 regular civics and 5 fits as well. Posted by: ziggy | Jun 11, 2008 11:32:14 AM Carmax.com only has one used Prius. I remember looking about a month ago and they had about 20. They only have one used Civic and it's not a hybrid. Bowrider - it appears that some people don't really care about the looks if they can get 50mpg. Also the other non-hybrid/high mpg vehicles (civic, fit, versa, yaris, etc)are selling just as well - it's just that more of them are produced and you can get them easier. This is something that the big 3 should have seen coming over the last 10 years but they lived with their SUV blinders on. Posted by: ziggy | Jun 11, 2008 11:57:25 AM Ziggy, This is not the first time you have stated that the big 3 should have seen this trend coming 10 years ago. Did you know fuel prices were going to go to record high after record high in 2007 and 2008? It's easy to say what they should have done but a company exists to make money and the money was in trucks and SUV's until quite recently. Instead of being so cynical, why don't you applaud them for the efforts they are doing to reinvent themselves. This is a historic shift for them and they are fighting for their very survival. Posted by: Keith | Jun 11, 2008 12:18:05 PM Scott Robinson Honda down in Torrance had 6 civic hybrids in stock and no mark ups. South day Toyota had none in stock as of last week and very bad customer service. Posted by: sam | Jun 11, 2008 12:26:42 PM keith, get over it. The Big Three has screwed themself along with all of their employees. Guys is where it is in part to the demand of the big 3's SUV's and Trucks. It wont be long until Honda is setting at tops with Toyota. Posted by: cory | Jun 11, 2008 12:56:35 PM Keith - If Honda and Toyota were able to produce the fuel efficient / hybrid vehicles 5 years ago then why didn't GM, Ford and Chrysler? You also have to take into account the 5 years of reseach that preceeded it. If Toyota and Honda could see it then why didn't the big 3. Lets see...applaud their efforts - okay lets applaud a hybrid Yukon or a $40,000 Volt. Or a hybrid Aura that gets 24mpg. Let's applaud the fact that Chrysler doesn't produce a vehicle that get over 30mpg. Let's applaud the fact that GM scrapped the electric vehicle years ago. Posted by: ziggy | Jun 11, 2008 1:14:59 PM Ziggy, Remember that Honda and Toyota developed those cars in Japan as well where the govt. encouraged the development. The market there with high gas prices 5-10 years ago also made them more attractive to Japanese buyers. But the Big 3 is still moving too slow in most regards. I think the battery development is also slowing everyone down. Posted by: Dave T. | Jun 11, 2008 1:42:03 PM Ziggy: The problem faced by the big 3 was their cost to produce a given vehicle, due to the UAW contract costs. As such, it was not profitable for them to produce smaller, cheaper cars. The US factories of the foreign makers are generally non union, creating a more efficient work flow. On top of that, they faced the dreaded quarterly reports. Wall Street wants to see profit and increased dollar sales. That translates into selling big, expensive vehicles. On top of that, the American consumer was voting for suvs and trucks with his wallet. The Japanese also made errors in judging the US market. Toyota has stated that their dollar results will be weak because the sales of cars like Corolla cannot bring in the dollars of big suvs and trucks. Honda is trying to avoid layoffs by moving some car production to US truck/suv lines. If the Japanese had been that omniscient, they would have been ready to ramp up Prius and Civic hybrid sales. They were not. In fact, they concentrated their US investments in truck and suv plants. Both Ford and GM have many small, efficient cars for sale, in Europe and other areas. In fact, their selection of such vehicles is huge in Europe. Nobody foresaw this super fast market shift in the US. Posted by: maxwell | Jun 11, 2008 1:51:53 PM IN Ziggy's defense I will say the Big 3 do employ and/or hire people to make these types of predictions and they plan their entire future lineups around such predictions. So, those folks were indeed wrong. Many other folks predicted $3 gas before Katrina. Posted by: Dave T. | Jun 11, 2008 2:06:13 PM Part of the issue in LA is the new Prius does not qualify for a car pool lane sticker. Part of the value is in that sticker. I'm sure SF is the same way. Posted by: | Jun 11, 2008 2:06:32 PM Maybe I should be more blunt - Why do you feel like you need to continue posting cynical comment after cynical comment about what the Big 3 should have done or how the Big 3 screwed themselves. I just don't understand what you are trying to accomplish by beating this dead horse over and over again. I get it. We all get it. Why do you take jabs at them in a post that absolutely does not pertain to the Big 3 whatsoever. When did it become so wrong to hold out a little hope for our own domestic auto industry or do you think we will all be better off if they just fail and shut down. Provide an intelligent, well-thought out response to these questions and then I'll "get over it." Posted by: Keith | Jun 11, 2008 2:08:12 PM I guess expressing what is "reality" is being "cynical". Oh well. Then maybe at the same time we should stop all of the articles about Honda's and Toyota's success'. Are we tired of hearing that as well? It's just that they have had opportunities, just in the last couple of years and have done anything. They have been showing small, high mpg vehicles at auto shows for the last five years yet don't produce them. I have no sympathy for that. Posted by: ziggy | Jun 11, 2008 2:49:15 PM Dave, Then why won't our government encourage the big 3 to develop those technology? Let me tell you why, because our government and people likes to stay behind on just about everything. The rest of the world uses metric system since how long ago? We are still stuck with the English system thus making some smart one at NASA crashing the exploring machine on Mars in 1998. Don't even get me started on internet cable or cell phone technology. Posted by: J | Jun 11, 2008 6:14:34 PM Put a deposit down on a Civic Hybrid here in Norman, OK last night. No Civic Hybrids in Oklahoma that I can find. There may be one or two in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but those seem to leave before the phone call can be made. My Civic Hybrid is on the boat coming from Japan and if there are no strikes, sinkings, or wrecks, I'll see it one month from now. Paying MSRP - no markup. No Prius vehicles anywhere to be had around here. S
