To many of you that may seem like forever before it gets here. For me it’s like it’s just around the corner and there is a ton of work to be done between now and then. Later this month the “preseason” officially gets started as I will be off to Birmingham, Ala., for SEC Football Media Days. That will be shortly followed by freshmen reporting, then the entire team, then daily practice. I know there’s some whining for a little more daily football information here on the blog and from here forward I’ll be trying to drum up some for you. But, just so you know, we’re already well at work on football. Right now is the time of year that we’re gathering information and doing interviews, etc., for our preseason football special section and also planning out a lot of our preseason coverage. Meanwhile, most of the Georgia football players are in Athens and in school and working out. There’s not a ton to report on that but I’ll be getting by there regularly to check in with players and coaches and see what’s going on. On that note I ran into fullback Brannan Southerland late last week as he left the Butts-Mehre Building. He was still on crutches and sporting a patriotic red, white and blue cast on his surgically repaired left foot and leg. Southerland was actually coming from a rehab workout. Southerland’s recovery period at first was expected to last at least five games into the season but he told me he’d be surprised if it went as long as three games. He even said he’s shooting for the first game but it’s been my experience all athletes are optimistic that way and I’m sure the training staff will be very careful with Southerland, who already has created a lot of NFL draft buzz. So there you go. There’s a little football fix to get you through your Monday. Like I said, I’ll be monitoring the team much more closely from here on. C-ya! Permalink | Comments (117) | Post your comment | Comments By GeoffDawg July 7, 2008 10:17 AM | Link to this Great news on Southerland. It would certainly be a boon to get him back for the meat of the schedule. By MDawg July 7, 2008 10:37 AM | Link to this Chip is right. This lull after spring practice till the season actually starts is when football fever gets BAD! Im so ready for Football season that Im actually getting geaked up for the GA Force playoff game tonight! Chip, any word or clue yet how recent the offseason incidents will affect the team? By DearingStDawg July 7, 2008 10:41 AM | Link to this Good news on Southerland. It’d be great to have him back for the big trip out West, though I think we’ll be all right at FB even if he’s a little too optimistic. I can’t really wait for two more months…. By Jack Daniel July 7, 2008 10:53 AM | Link to this Thanks Chip. This time of year is very hard for many people because there is nothing but baseball going on. I appreciate you being in touch with your followers and going the extra mile to keep the drinks coming before the main meal. You are the ultimate “Bartender”. By GoDJ July 7, 2008 11:14 AM | Link to this Thanks for some good news!! It’s nice to hear something positive, and not the usual “player getting arrested” news. Keep bringing us good news! Tell the rest of the staff at AJC that if another player gets arrested, just don’t report it because we would rather not know. By BullDawg Rick July 7, 2008 11:28 AM | Link to this Chipper… Thanks for the good news on Southerland.. Hope he’s ready by SC.. We need him at full strength during the meat of the sked.. He’s as important to the running game as any lineman.. He destroys the DE’s & OLB’s with that devestating kick out block… Knowshon & Caleb (& the Dawgs O) NEED him!!! Look forward to any other newz from the Classic City!! Go Dawgs!! By ChesterDawg July 7, 2008 11:30 AM | Link to this Did anyone see the NFL networks Top 10 show on all-time NFL programs that develop NFL talent? Only 2 SEC schools made the list Tenn. and ‘Bama. I hate to ruin it for everyone, but I was so upset by the top 3. Notre Dame, Miami and USC. I understand USC (who will lose to us this year in the NC title game). I even understand Notre Dame (all the national titles and tradition). But how did Miami end up #2. What have they done!! They went 5-7 last year. When is the last time they were relevent?? How did they make the list at #2 and UGA not make it at all. Are these people at NFL network smoking something? I am sure that if he sets his sights on getting back in time for the USC game, he will make it happen. By Chief Notahoma July 7, 2008 11:45 AM | Link to this Georgia will be 8-4 this season, 9-3 at best. I like the Bulldogs, but were caught up in the emotions of the last few games last year. This is the still the same group who was smashed by Tenn, lucky to beat Bama in overtime, and barely got by Vandy. With their tough schedule, I think its going to be worse than people expect. By baloney July 7, 2008 11:50 AM | Link to this The UGA players that aren’t in school or working out this summer can be seen picking up trash in Athens as part of their discipline. By jason July 7, 2008 11:57 AM | Link to this Not to diminish Southerland ( he is probably the best FB to play for UGA) but I think we will be okay with Chapas. I don’t know how long Munznamaier will be suspended; 1 game or 2.I am paticularly interested in the defense. We have expierenced secondary, but I know they can and will play even better. Does anyone else agree that we basicly play defense with roughly 4 safties on the field with our speed at LB. I look for Elerbe, and Owens to really break out this year. I know 33 was really good last, but this year even better. I also look for Reshad Jones to really come on also. Maybe the best DB by the end of the year. Damn, I am getting the shakes waiting for the season to begin. Go DAWGS #1. By BUZZYB July 7, 2008 12:01 PM | Link to this Chesterdawg, you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Every year UM has at least 1 player drafted in the first round, and usually more players drafted than 90% of the schools in D1. If you ignore Mickey Mantle’s 536 home runs and magical name for the ages, Chipper Jones is just a few seasons shy of ranking as the greatest switch-hitter ever. He’ll surpass Eddie Murray, whose 504 homers were aided by longevity and the DH. More significant, he’ll surpass Mantle, idolized by Jones, even though the Braves slugger was born four years after the Mick’s last game in pinstripes. You may stop gasping now, because it’s true. If you prefer not to believe me, then how about Bobby Cox? As Braves manager, Cox has seen every one of Jones’ 2,031 games. “He’s in the Hall of Fame, even if he stops playing right now,” said Cox on Thursday night at Turner Field, where Jones continued to swing beyond even his typically lofty standards. But back to Cox, among Mantle’s former teammates with those New York Yankees of yore, which means the following is rather huge. Said Cox, when asked about Jones likely becoming better overall at the plate than Mantle, than Murray, than any switch-hitter in professional baseball’s 139 years, “I think you could say that, yeah. I really do. You could say that he’s headed that way. Absolutely.” The New York Mets would agree, especially after Jones did much to sweep them out of town in four games. During the Braves’ 4-2 victory in this one, Jones stayed around Ted Williams territory (.400) after going 2-for-4 to raise his outrageously high bar for everybody else in the major leagues to.412. He displayed his ability to use his brain as well as his brawn in the seventh inning against the esteemed Johan Santana. With the score tied at 2-2 and runners at the corners, Jones calmly poked an outside pitch from the Mets’ left-handed ace into shallow right field to score the eventual winning run. It was the stuff of Mantle, a master in the clutch, and Cox should know. “Switch-hitters with power, and both of them could be laid-back at times, and both of them could have fun, and both of them could have that focus,” Cox said. “Nobody’s more focused than Chipper during a ballgame. I mean, he has total concentration. Mickey was the same way. Chipper doesn’t say a lot on the bench, because he’s watching everything that’s going on.” So much for the comparisons. Now to the contrasts. Mantle and Murray are the only switch-hitters with more home runs than Jones’ 398, but neither Mantle nor Murray finished with a career batting average over .300, where Jones has resided forever during his 15 seasons. Murray had those 573 at-bats as a DH to Jones’ 71, which means Jones has had to overcome more than Murray ever did by concentrating on fielding and hitting instead of just hitting. Plus, Jones has nine seasons of 100 RBIs or more and counting, while Murray had six and Mantle had four. We won’t even mention that Mantle often swung in a who’s who lineup, ranging from Joe DiMaggio to Yogi Berra to Roger Maris. In contrast, Jones mostly has been in batting orders for the Braves with good hitters instead of great ones. Such talk makes Jones force a smile after cringing. That’s because he has so much respect for his retired elders, already sitting in Cooperstown. “With Eddie, you always think about longevity, you think about runs produced, RBIs, runs scored and setting the bar so high,” Jones said. “With Mantle, you think about mammoth home runs, 500-plus homers, a career cut short because of injuries. I wanted to be the all-around guy that hits for average, high on-base percentage. Hit the home runs. Drove in the runs. If I have four or five more years with the same type of numbers, you might be able to put me in the same breath as those other guys. But it’s way too early to say I’m with the best of all time.” Actually, it isn’t. Permalink | Comments (64) | Categories: Braves/MLB Comments Commenting is now closed for this entry. By Patrick May 23, 2008 9:31 AM | Link to this Wow, I’m just hoping Texeira and Francoer heat up to give Chipper some more help in the lineup. Great article Terence, By Gene May 23, 2008 9:47 AM | Link to this I saw Mantle play a few times, and I mainly agree with Terrence on this one. There is no doubt that Chipper is the best hitter in baseball right now. Mantle had more pure power than Chipper, in spite of being significantly smaller or at least shorter at 5’11”. Chipper has a few more good years, and could reach 500 homeruns if he stays healthy. I would sure like to see Chipper with another WS ring before he quits. By ChrisfromSacramento May 23, 2008 9:51 AM | Link to this Chipper may not say it, but he is the best. ALL TIME!! By aefwb May 23, 2008 9:58 AM | Link to this Can we thank our lucky stars that Todd Van Poppel said he didn’t want to play for the Braves? If not for that….. By J-Bo May 23, 2008 10:00 AM | Link to this Right on Terrence. Chipper still has a good 3-5 years in him barring any serious injuries. Even if he has an average year in each of his remaining years, he will go down as the best switch-hitter of all time. I’m also very biased. All the GREAT Yankee hitters played in a park with a 330 ft left field where it was easy to hit an HR batting as a left hander and Mickey faced right-handed pitching a majority of the time. By prattvillenolzfan May 23, 2008 10:01 AM | Link to this Great article Terence… You hit it on the head Terence. The thing that makes Chipper so good is the fact that he is so focused. If you have the opportunity to draft the next Warren Sapp in Glenn Dorsey with the No. 3 pick overall in the NFL draft, you do it. Instead, the Falcons did the historically risky by taking a quarterback that high in the first round. That said, nobody is overpaid. In fact, most folks are underpaid. Others are within several pennies of what they should be making, including shortstops, point guards, defensemen and even quarterbacks making something like $72 million. I was an economics major in college, so trust me when I say Ryan isn’t overpaid, OK? Neither is any professional athlete, and there are many reasons why. Here are just five of them. USA, USA, USA We’re talking about supply and demand, free-market system, survival of the fittest, rugged individualism. All the American things that have generated cringing through the decades from Lenin to Mao to whoever invented the salary cap. In this country, whatever somebody is willing to pay you, then that’s what you’re worth — and likely more. The economic structure in professional sports is just a microcosm of this process, where attendance records and ticket prices have kept rising this century in the NFL, the NBA and baseball. That’s why, with the Falcons playing before a stuffed Georgia Dome for the past six years, Michael Vick ($130 million) was Matt Ryan before Matt Ryan. No soup kitchen here The next owner of a professional sports franchise to go bankrupt after paying a bunch of money to one of his players will be the first. Owners give all of that money to certain players, because owners have all of that money to give. Such is especially true in the NFL, where Forbes magazine estimated this year that five franchises are worth more than $1 billion. According to Forbes, the Falcons are ahead of only Minnesota in total value in the league, but the Falcons still are worth around $796 million. Not only that, Arthur Blank, the co-founder of Home Depot whose worth is placed at $1.3 billion by Forbes, bought the Falcons in 2002 for $545 million. You do the math. It doesn’t work that way Essentially, this is how the average fan thinks when — oh, say — a quarterback who hasn’t played a second in an NFL game gets something like $72 million. How can they pay that guy all of that money when you have school teachers barely making it? The same goes for nurses, law-enforcement officers and others around the minimum wage with oil prices soaring by the millisecond. Sorry to deliver the truth, but if that quarterback we just mentioned didn’t get $72 million, it wouldn’t translate into higher salaries for school teachers, nurses or police officers and relief at the gas pump for the weary. It would translate into more money in the pocket of that owner. A bleacher seat or the mortgage Here’s Part II to our previous point: The average fan also thinks that, if an owner doesn’t give something like $72 million to a quarterback who hasn’t played a second in an NFL game, such a scenario would lead to friendlier ticket prices. Not. There have been a slew of studies through the years to show there is no correlation between the rise of players salaries and the rise of ticket prices. Owners traditionally will raise ticket prices no matter what. And get this: Despite Ryan’s supposedly outrageous contract, the Falcons even lowered ticket prices for next season in the upper parts of the Georgia Dome. Just wait These things work themselves out. We’re back to the free-market system. For instance: Blank just put a $72 million bull’s-eye on the back and front of Ryan’s jersey. That means before the Falcons’ season reaches Halloween, Ryan has to start, and he has to play well. If Ryan becomes a pumpkin, that means he wasn’t worth all of that money, but only to Blank. It’s nobody else’s business, because it’s nobody else’s money. Permalink | Comments (50) | Post your comment | Categories: Falcons/NFL Comments By Najeh Davenpoop June 3, 2008 5:37 PM | Link to this It’s funny how the same people who probably vote for pro-free market political candidates just can’t stand it when the same free market pays pro athletes salaries beyond any they can dream of. Here’s a hint: if you think pro athletes are overpaid, quit watching pro sports. Watch college instead, where athletes can be exploited all you want while people who could never dream of playing a sport profit big time. I completely agree with this article, although I’m probably one of the few who do. By Herschel Talker June 3, 2008 5:44 PM | Link to this Terence is definitely not underpaid By The Grinch June 3, 2008 5:59 PM | Link to this Terrence, nobody’s gonna come watch games to see Dorsey when the offense is scoring 13 points a game with Redman/Harrington and no o-line. Unless Stafford or Tebow come out early next year, there isn’t gonna be anyone as good to take as Ryan was this year. NOBODY is going to the dome now; now is the time to get butts in the seats instead of losing money hoping the dome will be full watching a guy who plays 20 snaps a game for the defense. Wrong again. By Just a thought... June 3, 2008 6:10 PM | Link to this I would agree with the general premise of this blog, although maybe the shock over Ryan’s salary has more to do with what he is making in relation to other NFL players and not the public at large. REID, CHRISTIAN BOONEThe Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 07/07/08 A spokesman for Ruby Tuesday says a man who died of a shellfish allergy at its Lovejoy restaurant last week was served the dish he ordered. Rodney "Krook" Hawkins' wife disputes the Maryville, Tenn.-based chain's account, saying -- through a family representative -- that her husband did not order the Chicken Oscar entree, which contains crab meat. Linda Hawkins accompanied her husband to the restaurant.? Blog: How do you handle food allergies?" Recent headlines: Clayton committee held illegal meeting? Jonesboro dance coach removed as team's adviser? Clayton might bill parents for kids' school meals? ???? Clayton County news "She hopes that Ruby Tuesday accepts responsibility and does whatever is necessary to see that this doesn't happen again," said Chicago attorney Joseph Leonardi, speaking on behalf of the Hawkins family. Hawkins, 35, collapsed and went into anaphylactic shock Thursday night soon after consuming the shellfish at the Ruby Tuesday on Tara Boulevard, according to an autopsy conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The welder and aspiring rapper was rushed to Southern Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead a half hour later. Investigators have suggested a mix-up in the dinner order, but won't file any criminal charges. "He had ordered the Chicken Fresco and the Chicken Oscar was brought out by mistake," said GBI spokesman John Bankhead. Ruby Tuesday said its own review revealed no such error. "Our investigation of this incident, which includes interviews with the server and manager on duty and the collection of their written notes of what occurred, clearly indicates that the guest ordered Chicken Oscar, a dish that contains crab meat," Rick Johnson, a spokesman for the company, said in a statement sent to the AJC on Tuesday. "The server's order pad and the ticket to the kitchen also verify the accuracy of the order." The two dishes, restaurant officials point out, differ significantly in appearance. Chicken Fresco is topped with a tomato slice and chopped green herbs, while Chicken Oscar has crab meat and asparagus spears. "She [the server] is very clear that he repeated more than one time that Chicken Oscar was his choice," said Johnson, whose company has more than 25 metro Atlanta locations. "We don't believe there was any confusion on her part. Had he been confused . . . when the dish was brought to the table it would be been clearly visible to him that it had crab meat on it." Virginia Hawkins said in a phone interview from her Momence, Ill., home that her brother was allergic to shellfish since childhood. She said he moved from Illinois to metro Atlanta to pursue a rap music career. Anaphylaxis occurs when a trigger activates immune cells, which then release large amounts of multiple substances, including histamine, into the bloodstream, according to UpToDate.com, an online community for physicians. An estimated 500 to 1,000 people die annually from severe cases. News Researcher Sharon Gaus contributed to this report Vote for this story! The only thing that would have made it better would have been if it was in front of the right-field crazies at Foley Field. It’s nice to see that in the midst of this year’s run by the Diamond Dogs that coach David Perno is finally getting some media attention and respect. Maybe the bad-every-other-year nature of the Bulldogs in recent times has something to do with it, but up to now Perno has definitely been overlooked. Taking his team to a third College World Series in five years makes a serious statement, though, and merits Damon Evans and his boss shaking loose some of those big profits UGA athletics makes to reward Perno and provide his program with any upgrades it needs. And while we’re at it, a tip of the cap to Ron Polk, who in his brief stay in Athens made UGA a force to be reckoned with in baseball. SOME FOOTBALL INTERNET FUN: My brother Tim sent me this recently, and unlike most SEC sports-related stuff that gets forwarded around folks’ e-mail in-boxes, this one not only is suitable for reprinting, but manages to be funny and show some knowledge of the conference and world affairs at the same time. Hard to believe it originated in Alabama, but that’s what it looks like, though nobody seems to know who wrote it. It’s been bouncing around the Internet for several months now, but for those of you who haven’t yet seen it, here it is: The SEC as the Middle East: ALABAMA: Saudi Arabia. Once a proud kingdom, torn up by fighting and surrounded by Iran and Iraq (see below), with someone in Al-Qaeda hell bent on bringing them down. LSU: Iran. Current superpower in the region but it will all come crashing down because they have a highly functioning retard as a leader. TENNESSEE: Iraq. Got a bunch of history but the country as a whole is going in the tank and they will kill themselves off before it is all over. FLORIDA: Syria. Evil punks who will stoop to whatever level they need to win. No real history to speak of but thinks they are the cradle of civilization. GEORGIA: Kuwait. Tons of riches and unrealized potential, but still vulnerable to Iraq. AUBURN: Al Qaeda. No country, just a movement of disgruntled fanatics who live to blow up those who are more fortunate. No other goal in life than to bring down the House of Saudi Arabia. Terrorizing the Arabians for 6 years is the crowning achievement in their history. Signing day was a major setback to the movement. They will be looking for a new leader soon. ARKANSAS: Palestinian territories. No one really cares or worries about them unless they can be of some use (i.e. winning a battle once in a while against Iran that causes a bit of shake up in rankings) MISSISSIPPI STATE: Qatar. Where is Qatar, anyway? OLE MISS: Afghanistan. Not much going for it, but hot women. VANDERBILT: Israel. Just leave them alone for God’s sake. What did they ever do to you? KENTUCKY: Morocco. Not really part of the Middle East. Has other things to do than fight (or play football) SOUTH CAROLINA: Libya. Has a charismatic leader in a land of nothingness. Will rattle his sword but knows he does not have a whole heck of a lot to back it up with. That’s it. Again, the writer definitely seems to betray a Crimson Tide orientation, but some of the entries are pretty clever. I don’t really think Kuwait is a suitable choice for UGA, though. I’d say United Arab Emirates would be closer: Rich in resources and home to a bunch of millionaires to be. POOCH KICKS: I don’t think there was ever any doubt of this, but for those of you who need reassurance that the football Dawgs will be back in black, Mark Richt told the Greater Augusta Bulldog Club recently that although he gave last year’s black jerseys to the players after the bowl game, more have been ordered “so I’m sure we’ll see them again.” … Interesting to see Georgia State’s new football coach, Bill “Bring the cheaters to their knees” Curry, hailed as an inspired choice along the lines of Erk Russell. Curry has been a lot of things, including a good NFL center, a polished inspirational speaker, an apparently upright and honest man (though priggish and sanctimonious at times) … and a decent football coach, at least during a couple of years at Tech and at Alabama. But Erk Russell was a towering folk figure beloved at two schools who consistently managed to get more out of his players than anyone had a right to expect and who had a hand in several national championships. Bill Curry is no Erk Russell. The bad news? Florida, your hated rival, just won its second national championship in three years. The worse news? The Gators, it appears, are just getting started. Urban Meyer came here Friday morning to pick up all of the hardware that comes with being a national champ. Meyer said he enjoyed the first national championship he won as Florida’s head coach in 2006. But Friday morning Meyer said he is going to enjoy this one a lot more. “I’m not sure I took the time to savor that first one because was all so new. That year we had a good team but we didn’t have a good program,” Meyer said. “Now we have both. That makes this one very special.” In a private conversation with me in February of 2007, Meyer said he was not pleased with the state of the Florida football program after the national championship season. “Too many people focused on themselves. Not enough people focused on the team and each other,” Meyer said. “We are going to change that.” Meyer won the 2006 a national championship with a team dominated by recruits of former coach Ron Zook. Meyer liked those guys but they weren’t HIS guys. These are his guys and he doesn’t like them. He loves them. “What we have here now is very special at Florida,” Meyer said. “We should have a really good team coming back next year.” If you’re a Georgia fan, you need to understand what Meyer has built at Florida in just four short years and what things look like for the Gators down the road. Of the 24 players on the offensive depth chart last night against Oklahoma, 18 still have eligibility remaining for 2009 (6 juniors, 8 sophomores, and 4 freshmen). The defense had held the nation’s highest scoring team (54 points per game) to only two touchdowns did not have a senior among its top 22 players. Of the group that played in the BCS championship game, 16 were sophomores, redshirt freshmen or freshmen. No one here expects Percy Harvin, who is such an incredible talent, to return next season. Harvin made everybody hold their breath every time he touched the ball last night. But he is simply too fragile. He needs to go to the NFL and make some money. Linebacker Brandon Spikes, who was the heart and soul of that defense, is also expected to turn pro. Quarterback Tim Tebow will be a more interesting decision. Simply put, if Tebow comes back Florida should be the consensus preseason No. 1 pick. If he doesn’t come back sophomore John Brantley will take over and Florida will still be pretty good. But the Gators may not be national championship good. Meyer said Friday morning that Tebow’s decision will come in the next few days. Tebow has two national championship rings and a Heisman Trophy. If he comes back, he could win both again. Bottom line: If Urban Meyer signs another top five recruiting class, which he is expected to do, it may be a while before Georgia, or anybody else in the SEC East, is going to be able to unseat the Gators from the top of the division. Florida has separated itself from the field and shows no signs of slowing down. Meyer was working the phones to recruits last night after the national championship game. He said Friday that he has only “4 or 5” slots left. “We want to make sure those four or five are really good ones.” It’s a pretty good bet that the Gators will have a lot of fun on national signing day. I’m never comfortable using the “dynasty” word. It’s too vague. But what Florida appears to be doing is putting together a program that can have a Southern California kind of run. Yes, the Trojans play in the Pac-10 and not the SEC and that’s huge. But Florida took another big step forward last night. Everybody else in the SEC East, including Georgia, is going to have to step up to meet the challenge. Because as long as Meyer is in Gainesville, I don’t see the Gators taking a step back. Ladies and gentlemen, that puts a wrap on the 2008 season for me and this blog. I am going off for an extended vacation with Mrs. Barnhart, something she has richly earned. I will return on Monday, Feb. 9 and will resume this blog. We’ll probably do it about three times a week until we get into spring practice which, by that time, won’t be far around the corner. I want to thank all of you for the great support this season. It has been a wonderful season and I’ve really enjoyed being a part of it. I always tell my friends from other media outlets that we have the smartest college football fans in the world in the South. You proved it once again this season. Also, starting offensive guard Clint Boling, who had been arrested for DUI back in the spring, was suspended for two games Thursday, according to an announcement by coach Mark Richt, and charges were dropped against defensive end Jeremy Lomax, who was cited last month for carrying a concealed weapon.RELATED STORIES UGA faces Alabama in first game without Felton? More UGA coverage Lemon, a redshirt sophomore from Lizella, near Macon, was wanted on two battery charges - one of which was a felony - in connection with a fight that occurred at an Athens apartment complex Saturday night. UGA student DeMarius Jackson suffered a fracture of his left eye socket as a result of punches he claims he took from Lemon. A felony warrant for Lemon's arrest was issued by the Athens-Clarke County district attorney's office late Wednesday afternoon. Lemon turned himself in at the Athens-Clarke County Jail at 10:24 a.m. Thursday morning. He was released 38 minutes later after posting a $2,500 bond. Georgia athletics association spokesman Claude Felton said that Lemon's indefinite suspension "was an automatic thing" in keeping with athletics department policy. Any athlete charged with a felony offense is suspended "immediately and indefinitely" from team participation until an internal investigation is completed. Richt could not be reached for comment on the Lemon case. He was at Fort Stewart on Thursday welcoming back U.S. troops from overseas duties. However, he issued a statement through the sports communications office. "I'm certainly disappointed in a few of our players who have made poor decisions during the off season," Richt said. "It is of great concern, and we take it very seriously. They will be dealt with accordingly and will pay a price. Each one will be disciplined based on the severity of their actions." Lemon was the seventh Georgia football to be arrested by police since the end of last season. In addition to Boling and Lomax, other Bulldogs arrested this year include offensive guard Justin Anderson (simple battery), defensive back Donovan Baldwin (DUI), fullback Fred Munzenmaier (underage possession), and offensive tackle Trinton Sturdivant (simple battery). The cases of Anderson and Sturdivant are ongoing. Richt indicated in the news release he does not believe his 2008 team, ranked No. 1 in some preseason polls, has a discipline problem. He cited the team's 3.23 combined grade-point average in the previous semester and their volunteer work with children and charities. "I'm extremely excited about what the vast majority of our team has been doing on a daily basis this summer," Richt said. "They're working hard in the classroom, and there's certainly a buzz from our veteran players as to the work ethic and effort they've seen in their weightlifting, running and position workouts. Virtually every one of our players is giving back to the community this summer." Vote for this story! SWARTZThe Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 07/01/08 Maybe there wasn't enough post primary election drama to keep viewers hooked. Prime-time ratings for the second quarter showed viewers dropped off significantly from all cable news networks ? Atlanta's CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, CNBC and CNN's Headline News ? from the first three months of the year.BUSINESS Latest Headlines: Delta, Northwest fliers can combine miles? Business photo galleries No. 1 overall news network Fox captured 1.6 million prime-time viewers during the second quarter, an 11 percent drop from the first quarter. No. 2 CNN had 961,000 prime-time viewers, a 23 percent decline. The figures are Nielsen Media Research data supplied by the two networks. "The interest in the political stuff is waning a little bit," said Derek Baine, an analyst at SNL Kagan Research, a media and financial research firm in New York. "It was very exciting there for a little while when it was neck and neck, and once the writing was on the wall that (Sen.) Hillary (Clinton) was going to have to drop out, people stopped watching." Kagan said cable TV news ratings may continue to drop during the summer months as well because of the lack of election-related events. Each network could point to some good news. Fox recaptured prized ground: 344,000 prime-time viewers age 25-54 vs. CNN's 297,000 in the second quarter. CNN won that category in the first quarter for the first time since 2001. Still, CNN's prime-time viewers age 25-54 and overall were up considerably from a year earlier. For example, CNN's overall prime-time viewership rose 26 percent vs. about 7 percent for Fox during the 12-month period. "I think (Sen. Barack) Obama's nomination and his winning the primaries has changed things dramatically for cable, and I think that's one of the reasons why Fox hasn't been doing as well," said Paul Levinson, chairman of Fordham University's communication and media studies department. "People who support Obama don't watch Fox much." Richard White, a spokesman for Fox News, disagreed. Noting Fox regained the lead in a key prime-time demographic, White said, "It's surprising that a chairman of a communications and media department could be so out of touch and ill-informed." Levinson said the Internet is also eating into cable news ratings as more people continue to get their news online. "Cable is not as hot as it was four years ago," he said. Vote for this story!
