It’s tough, it’s hard, it’s … I’d even actually use the word violent. It certainly felt like the community as a whole took a sock to the gut with this news. Everyone was bopping along, going “yay WAR”, and then fell on their faces. Overall though, I think this is going to be good for the community in the long run. At the very least, this resets expectations. Spent some time with my family this evening, and there was a lot of talk about expectations vs. reality; when expectations are ‘greater’ than reality can provide, the result is unhappiness. By manually setting expectations for fans at a lower level, it guarantees that players will be (probably) less unhappy. It nails into the ground anyone who could have said they were trying to rush this out the door poorly made. They were so

So how do these people increase their link popularity naturally? They grow their links by writing good content or by creating a good product/service. Content Brian Benzinger, the author of Solution Watch does not do any sort of link building campaigns for his blog. He spends his time writing good, in-depth content on web 2.0 companies. He has been writing for over 1 year and already has over 20,000 natural incoming links which gets him a lot of search engine love. Products/Services Box.net created an online storage solution for anyone looking to store files online. They may speak English there, but most citizens still need an interpreter to understand its ways and meanings. DAVID CORN, the Washington editor of The Nation magazine, has spent years analyzing the policies and pursuing the lies that spew out of the nation's capital. He is a novelist, biographer, and television and radio commentator who is able to both decipher and scrutinize Washington. In his dispatches, he takes on the day-by-day political and policy battles under way in the Capitol, the White House, the think tanks, and the television studios. • Whatever is cool with me. Whatever is cool with me. Powered by horse and buggy. This stuff only happens to me, I swear. July 8th, 2008 In the 3 years since I moved to Kendallville, I have made several attempts to find a nice place to play paintball. Each and every one of those attempts failed. Miserably. Back home, I played paintball fairly regularly. I started playing paintball in the fourth grade and played at least once a month and sometimes more than once a month. There was a brief stint where I even played in a few tournaments. I didn’t win anything but I was in it for the sport, so just getting out and playing on a higher level made me feel good. The last 3 years, not so much. Any field I looked at was always outoors, and/or poorly regulated, over priced or all of the above. With such a crushing cosmic defeat I listed my gear for sale on numerous internet forums, classified sites, newspaper ads and took it to pro shops to off load it. I had accepted that I would never play paintb

  • Grimwell’s Blog Grimwell’s Blog Joy in games, joy in life Wed 8 Oct 2008 Creating Guilds - Why is the standard a pain? Posted by Grimwell under Armchair Designer, Online Games [12] Comments So I’m playing Warhammer Online and having a great time with it. You can check countless other websites for reviews and perspectives on the game itself, I’m not going there. I’m having fun with it and that’s enough for me at the moment. I’d like to raise a point of general contention though — about something that is not limited to WAR, but definitely reared it’s head for me yet again in WAR. Forming guilds sucks. In WAR, just as in my own beloved EQII, you have to get six people together in front of a guild registrar, group them, and then sign on to be a guild. In WAR, just as in my own beloved EQII (I repeat that because I’m not criticizing WAR, I’m criticizing a generally accepted MMO design tradition), when I run around not in a guild, people send me offers of in game wealth if I’ll help them form a guild — even if I immediately quit the guild. Why is this? Because they have less than six folks who they want to play with, but they want at least some of the perks that guilds offer. This is stupid, counter intuitive, and I’ll ramble more about it after the break. (more…) ? Wed 1 Oct 2008 Seen any interesting websites lately? Posted by Grimwell under Internet [11] Comments Remember when the Internet was shiny and new? You could spend all day typing in random URL’s just to see what would come up. The entire internet seemed boundless, infinite, and interesting. There was a site for everything, and always something new lurking just around the corner of that next link. It was an exciting time full of opportunity. These days the net feels much more stratified. There seems to be less places of interest to haunt. Or perhaps they are just harder to find? All I know for sure is that there are times when I’m sitting in front of the computer, and I don’t have any idea what to look at. I’m up to speed on all the forums and gaming websites I haunt. I’ve read all the news I can handle, and added my photoshop to Fark. Even my Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter pages have been updated… and it took about twenty minutes. Throw a dog a bone here, if you’ve found some interesting havens on the net, put a link in the comments. I’ll be deleting the spammers as usual, but if you’ve got something to lite my fire — or if it lites yours… why not eh? ? Thu 25 Sep 2008 Karma Posted by Grimwell under Online Games [2] Comments Jack Thompson Disbarred. I can’t say I feel for the guy, mainly because I don’t. ? Thu 25 Sep 2008 Steampunk Posted by Grimwell under Armchair Designer, Online Games [4] Comments Stephen H. Segal was the recent writer for a guest column at Fantasy Magazine’s website. He covered a topic that needs high visibility in gaming circles: Five Thoughts On The Popularity Of Steampunk. It’s a solid treatment of why this genre works, and not just for the core male audience (almost in spite of it really). Video games have not done a Steampunk game whole cloth since Arcanum — or if there has been one it didn’t get high visibility (and someone needs to link me to it). I think there is a real opportunity there… ? Fri 19 Sep 2008 Shiver the Gangplanks and Hoist me Timbers! Posted by Grimwell under Funny No Comments Yup, it’s that day again! Arrgh! I’m listening to West Virginia Public Radio’s online stream right now, they are doing pirate themed music (scores from pirate movies). It’s quite nice, I suggest looking it up on the Google. ? Mon 15 Sep 2008 Letting People Play Together Posted by Grimwell under Armchair Designer, Online Games [10] Comments Like a good number of folks, I spent my free time in the WAR open beta last week. Two second review: I’m buying it. So I didn’t blog much because I was busy having fun. Plus I wasn’t motivated to jump into the discussions rolling around the MMO blogs. I’ve known people can be jerks for years, I think we all have, so what’s to say there? I’m not going to AGDC so there wasn’t much to note there — other than I’m actually relieved. One thing did come up that I wanted to blog about, but didn’t get around to. This morning I’m fixing that because it was an important headline and I didn’t see it get picked up. Let’s do that after the break so my emo “This is why I wasn’t blogging.” stint does not get in the way. (more…) ? Wed 3 Sep 2008 Gaming Daddy Posted by Grimwell under Family & Life, Offline Gaming [4] Comments I’m prepping to run my first 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons game later this month. I’ve had the books for a little while and am now free enough in my pending schedule to commit to GM’ing for a group of people again. The only real area of concern I have about running and my capacity to do so is flow. I like games to run smoothly, and new rules mean less flow. Obviously reading up on the rules and campaign reports of other gamers is a great way to anticipate hiccups and have solutions on hand, and I’m pretty active in the PenandPaperGames.com community so I’m doing that bit of homework; but it’s never enough unitl the rubber hits the road. So I’m brainstorming it all over and over again to get ready and find ways to protect the flow. One of which is to actually sit down and run a game with my kids. I have three of them, ages 6, 8, and 11. Each of them is a gamer in their own way — which is pretty much a fate anyone suffers in my family — so its quite possible they will respond well to it. Plus, if I can make 4E so simple that kids can handle it, going for a normal session with adults should be easy. Kids don’t care as much about rules as they do flow. If I can keep them entertained I win. Plus, it’s a good time to introduce them all to dad’s perennial gaming pastime and see who likes it enough to stick around. Now to just find the time to do that and prep for the regular game. Such is the life of a parent right? ? Fri 29 Aug 2008 Best Political Headline of the Day Posted by Grimwell under Funny [4] Comments McCain Taps Alaska Governor Palin… optical communications I’m trying to avoid political blog posts this year… but I will say that it’s nice to see that no matter which ticket wins, we will have a historical first in the White House. It’s about time. Update: This picture is all I need. Elect her now. She’s into CosPlay!!! Lightning bolt! ? Wed 27 Aug 2008 Chinese Gold Farmer Wins Lawsuit, Recovers Banned Account, Items — Oh Boy Posted by Grimwell under Online Games [9] Comments I’ve been in a bit of a cave, so if this isn’t the first time you’ve read about this please be nice and giggle at how far behind the times I’ve found myself. Too lazy to read the article? Fine, here’s the power quote: Earlier this month, a Chinese man named Zhou Xujun won a lawsuit against an online gaming company. His characters, weapons and other virtual goodies were returned to him. Xujun had been removed from the virtual arena of World of Warcraft, a massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), for exploiting a software bug in order to increase his cache of virtual gold. This isn’t a “Ha, ha! Look at WoW!” post… it’s an “Aww crap!” post. If you don’t already understand why, catch me after the jump and I’ll break it down. (more…) ? It loosely follows the examples cited and linked from within part one in this mini-series, and i hope it helps in illustrating the usefulness of the model I described in part two for understanding avatars, especially as an important component of both games and social media. One inconsistency that I encountered in my model is regarding the topic of textual achievements. I found that if a system didn’t provide the ability to automatically describe or summarize pertinent achievements or possessions, users often care enough to list them on their own. Although one might guess that these achievement summaries might not be as trustworthy as system-maintained ones, there might be enough community pressure to keep people from exaggerating these sections. Anyway, I’ll start with the most obvious, accepted uses of the term “Avatar” and try to experiment with this model by explaining the examples in context. The well-documented MMORPG scene’s king, World of Warcraft, probably presents the best example of what we normally think of as an avatar. Here, we can see three player-customized three dimensional models of characters they play in the game world, with their character names floating above their heads. Also present is a guild tag, implying membership in a group of characters. I’d consider these all marks that efficiently communicate identity in a standardized visual format, which would put them at the top layer in the model. In addition to the player-controlled customizations, the game also may adapts your character’s appearance depending on what items, armor, or weapons you have equipped (although i’m told headgear is an optional one). This communicates efficiently what level a character is through the visual medium ? kind of like status symbols in the real world, and for that purpose, i’d consider them as Visual Achievements. In Battlefield 2, a popular team-based first-person shooter that emphasizes multiplayer play, the player appears in-game as a random avatar picked from a library of models corresponding to that person’s class and team choices. However, the username appears above teammates’ heads, alongside a visual icon that represent’s the player’s class. This gives us a quick, reliable of the experience level of the person the avatar represents, and is a clear example of a system-maintained visual achievement icon. In Flickr, a buddy icon list can also be understood as the presentation of groups of avatars Recognizable Marks. Screen names on Flickr, in combination with buddy icons, help us identify those who we know, those who we don’t know, and those who we might be attracted to and therefore whose photos we should go check out. Kidding aside, Flickr is definitely a step apart from World of Warcraft in its use of these avatar elements, because you can easily change your screen name or buddy icon at any time. Perhaps it’s the relative stability of profiles that you encounter in a Flickr experience that make this a non-issue… in any case, the usage still performs a similar role. MySpace, arguable the most notable social software application in use today, can be used to demonstrate the difference between the layer of recognizable marks and the layer of autobiography. Above, we just see a MySpace buddyicon and username. This is how all users appear in each others’ friends lists and comments made on other users’ profiles. Clicking into that username reveals the full profile, the home to the greater amount of information that acts as more of an autobiography. This is where users have come to expect greater customization possibilities, and the ability to fully express themselves. The boundary between the two is pretty straightforward, yet both are elements of avatars. Moving on to more mainstream web (but still social media!) uses of the avatar, let’s take a closer look at these three examples of messageboard-style avatars. I’ve found that messageboard-style avatars typically combine Recognizable Marks such as username and graphical buddy icon, as well as a few Textual Achievements (Member Since, # Posts being the most common), and will often encourage the use of a user-modified signature. In the first example, from SomethingAwful forums, we can see the use of graphical avatar along with username, Member Since, and a small slogan snippet of text. It’s a very old, well established messageboard, and we can look at it as an example of the classic style of messageboard avatars. In the second example, taken from Woot.com, we can see that graphical avatars aren’t present, but the user has added in his own small picture, and also appended a custom signature that lists his “achievements” on woot; namely, those items that he’s managed to buy. Impressively, he has racked up 3 Bags of Crap (”Bandolier of Carrots”), which can earn him some definite credibility within this community. Although this sig is user-defined, he’s chosen to take the approach of listing Achievements instead of writing a bio or similar info; this may be a clue to the suitability of Achievements (visual or textual) to this communication space. PelicanParts, being a car community where grease-monkeys help one another, has a few interesting twists on the recognizable marks being shown in the profile. Since trust does play a bigger role in deciding whose mechanical advice one should follow, the Textual Achievement of number of posts is definitely a key metric to look at. The “Senior Member” that appears probably also gives more trust in combination with the # of posts, but unfortunately, those titles are member-defined. Still, i’m sure that community mores enforce the accuracy of that title. Additionally, geography is an important thing to consider, because members will often ask for recommendations, or reach out to other forum members in need. That helps to explain why the additional information of “Location” is available in that compressed area. We can also see a glimpse of the Autobiographical / Textual Achievements written in the user’s signature below. Now, I’d like to spend a little time showing examples of dynamically generated visualizations of user participation in games or social media. These aren’t often considered a “part” of a user’s avatar, but in the discussed model, it can definitely play a large part in a user’s identity! It’s not totally mainstream yet, as in the following examples, these presentations are mostly generated by third parties. In this example, raw WoW play data is compiled for a single user, and then gets represented in this syndicated, visual form. In BF2S, a popular 3rd party statistical website covering Battlefield 2 accounts, offers a great deal of statistical insight into a player’s raw play data, going as far as to analyze every shot ever fired during a ranked game. This information can also be presented in a format suitable for signatures placed on forum postings. It’s interesting to note that making statistical information available to 3rd parties allows users to syndicate out these visual and textual achievements in various visualizations themselves, and still retain the trusted nature of presenting dynamically updating game data. Yet again, we can find a clear parallel going on in Flickr, as statistics easily available via the Flickr API can be reformatted in a visually appealing treatment, and resyndicated back to a user’s profile to become a part of their avatar. An interesting and progressive approach to system-controlled visual achievements is Fable, a game for Xbox that gradually changes the entire appearance of your avatar depending on the actions your character takes during his life. It makes one wonder what else might be possible for highly dynamic games and social software to adjust, based upon your actions in the community! One of my favorite examples of visual achievements is actually quite revolutionary ? the Xbox Live platform has actually fully adopted achievements throughout its games. These are some examples of achievements you can get in Gears of War. Not only are these available just within the game, they show up in your Xbox Live account, and provide insight into depth of usage across titles for a particular user in a fun, graphically catchy way. Microsoft’s name for this platform program is Gamertag. It can’t be discounted that it turns the user profile into social media of a sort, and makes collection of identity across a game platform into a game of its own. And yet again, we can find a quick example of 3rd party syndication of this data. Here, we can see small icons that represent games the user has played ? again, information that takes a while to digest textually, but is relatively quick and seamless to glance over visually. That’s pretty much all i’ve got time for! I definitely covered a lot of examples here, touching on all of the parts of the Understanding Avatars model that I threw together. One conclusion we can draw from this as social media or game developers is that providing raw statistical game data gives users trusted ways to express their identity within a particular community. At the least, this will allow third parties to provide ways for users to include these aspects of identity more easily within their avatars. Our consistent use of games and social media is actually what builds our reputation over time, and creating simple ways to express this part of identity creates a feedback loop that can dramatically change the nature of engagement with our products. • Errata Security: Blizzard's Two-Factor Authentication skip to main | skip to sidebar Errata Security Errata Security is a consulting and product testing company that offers expertise in cybersecurity to our clients. Monday, June 30, 2008 Blizzard's Two-Factor Authentication Posted by Robert Graham at 2:16 AM Blizzard's announcement of two-factor authentication for World of Warcraft is more significant than people realize.Passwords are obsolete. They are broken. We all recognize this, yet we aren't quite ready to give up on passwords because we haven't an easy alternative.World of Warcraft (WoW) is a good test case. It is the biggest online game and has the largest "black market" where people buy in-game money ("gold") for real-world dollars. User accounts, protected only by passwords, have real-world value. Hackers first strip the accounts for gold, then use the accounts as mules to sell gold and spam others with messages advertising their gold. Blizzard eventually bans the account, by which point the hackers have moved onto the next hacked account. This is a huge cost. It costs Blizzard a lot of money (I would guess in the range of $100) to help a user recover from a hacked account. That assumes the user still wants to play and doesn't cancel their $15-a-month subscription, which costs Blizzard even more money. Today's "viruses" usually contain keyloggers that specifically look for people logging into games like WoW. Phishing attacks likewise target gamers. However, there is an even easier way to getting people's account names. People choose the same username/password for multiple sites. Therefore, if you want to steal somebody's account, you simply set up a site that requires a username/password and encourage players to log in. You then test all the accounts on your own site in order to see if they are also legitimate WoW accounts. Likewise, when hackers break into online sites, they can crack the password file and test how many are legitimate WoW accounts. There are also other tricks. I just googled "hack warcraft account" and came up with a bunch of YouTube videos. You should watch them if you want to plumb the depths of human stupidity. They don't teach you to hack somebody's account. Instead, they show you a lot of technical mumbo jumbo, and bury within it all the tiny detail that you e-mail your own username/password to an account like "blizzard-character-recovery@hotmail.com". This account is not owned by Blizzard, but by the hacker trying to social engineer you into revealing your own WoW password. If users are too stupid to make choices about passwords, the obvious solution is to take that responsibility out of their hands. That's what Blizzard has done. They are selling the user a typical two-factor-authentication device. Without this device, nobody can log into the account. Some experts claim that two-factor authentication won't work. They are wrong, of course. There is not such thing as perfect security. Any solution has flaws, so for any solution, you'll have experts lining up to explain why it's not perfect. The only real question is whether something will improve security, and how much it costs, and whether the benefits outweigh the costs.Blizzard is charging $6 for the tokens. This sounds like they are providing these "at cost". There are other costs to Blizzard, too. They need to maintain software on the backend that works with the keys. They also need to deal with support costs, as users break the keys and lose them. The users themselves will also experience costs. They have to learn how to use they keys, and it makes logging onto their account more annoying. That last item is an important cost - WoW makes money when their games are fun, annoyances caused by security make games less fun.The benefits would be big. Users who use the same username/password on multiple accounts would no longer be danger. Phishing attacks would similarly be broken. Keyloggers in malware would no longer be a threat. Hackers could update their malware from simple keyloggers to hacks that would allow them to hijack WoW sessions, but that would be very costly. Keyloggers hack a wide range of applications, not just WoW - custom software for each application may not be worth it. Moreover, if hackers do come up with techniques to hijack sessions, Blizzard could quickly counter them with their famous "Warden" program.Blizzard's experiment is an interest for all of us. Bank's are trying out jury-rigged authentication schemes to avoid the difficulties of hardware devices like Blizzard's. In our experience as pentesters and system evaluators, these schemes suck. It is our belief that no system can be successful that relies upon people being smart about their authentication credentials. If Blizzard can show success with this system in the gaming community, it'll be a huge boost for the approach in other areas as well. 3 comments: Matei-Eugen said... Some banks are already using this login mechanism for their internet banking sites. The two examples that I know are ING Romania and BCR, but, most probably, there are more of them out there. 12:45 PM nicj said... Sure its inconvenient, but there are not many alternatives. It is becoming far to easy for people to get a hold of other peoples passwords for everything! Washington State comes in last. Some other thoughts of noteMichigan has the 75th ranked offense and the 61st defense, and overall is ranked 100th!The worst team in 1-A is North Texas. The worst offense is Washington State and the worst defense is Idaho. Brutally realistic about the present. Grudgingly optimistic about the future. Thursday, January 29, 2009 Live-blogging Leafs vs. Avs I will be live-blogging tonight's Leafs/Avs game over at thescore.com. Feel free to drop by whenever the PPP game thread freezes, and find out how many Raycroft saves and/or shots of tequila it will take before I snap and get myself fired.TheScore.com live blog - Avs vs. Leafs(Fair warning: if the game is dull, I plan to randomly start liveblogging games from the Leafs 1993 playoff run instead.) Posted by Down Goes Brown at 12:55 PM 9 comments Labels: avs, liveblog Has fighting really been dropping since the 90s? The numbers. In my last post, I made reference to my assumption that while fighting may have increased this season, it's still down significantly from 15 years ago. I linked to some data from hockeyfights.com that went back as far 2001, then said this:While I can't find any stats on fighting frequency in 1993, I feel pretty safe in saying it was significantly higher than even this season's numbers. If anyone can point to the numbers and they prove me wrong, I'll be glad to eat some crow.An anonymous commenter, who I'm just going to go ahead and assume is Howard Berger, called me on it:It isn't good enough for me for you to basically suggest, "I think I'm right, but if you prove me wrong, by all means. Until then, this argument stands." It's the kind of technique you'd call Damien on and it undermines your argument, in my opinion. After permanently IP-banning him, I got to thinking about his comment. I decided to dig a little deeper and ended up finding what I think are some reasonable ballpark numbers going back to 1991.So, once again courtesy hockeyfights.com, here are some estimates. I took their yearly fight log for each season, and counted the number of fights listed. I call this an estimate, since I'm not sure how complete their records are (although my guess is they're pretty complete) and there may be some altercations included where both guys didn't get majors. Still, when it comes to fight data online hockeyfights.com is pretty much the undisputed champ, so I feel pretty good about these numbers.(Update: the owner of hockeyfights.com confirmed that they're "very confident" that the data is complete, with the exception of the occasional tweak.)Here's what the numbers show. All are for regular season only.1990-91 - 772 fights1991-92 - 792 fights1992-93 - 642 fights1993-94 - 835 fights1994-95 - 506 fights (short-season due to lockout)1995-96 - 785 fights1996-97 - 907 fights1997-98 - 838 fights1998-99 - 660 fights1999-00 - 573 fights2000-01 - 684 fights2001-02 - 803 fights2002-03 - 668 fights2003-04 - 789 fights2004-05 - No season2005-06 - 466 fights2006-07 - 497 fights2007-08 - 664 fights2008-09 - 784 fights (projected)In graph form (minus the lockout years):So was my assumption about fighting dropping over the past 15+ years correct? Mostly, with a few caveats. There's clearly been a downward trend since the early 90s. The drop doesn't actually seem to start in earnest until the late 90s, which is later than I had assumed. There's a big drop in 1998, a climb back up, and then fighting falls off a cliff after the lockout.I made the point that even if fighting reaches its projected level for this season (which is unlikely since fighting usually declines late in the season), it would still fall far below the levels seen in the 90s. That turns out to be true, although perhaps not as significantly as I would have expected.Beyond that, my reference to 1993 actually turned out to be wrong, at least as far as the 1992-93 season goes. That year saw fewer fights than even last season, which seems surprising. It was also an out lier, far below the average of other years in the early 90s.Why? What happened in 1992-93? Answer: The instigator rule. The rule came into effect that year, and initially caused a significant reduction in fighting. Those who were fans back then will remember how haphazardly the rule was applied in that first season, with referees trying to call it on virtually every fight. Sometimes it seemed that if your gloves hit the ice a fraction of a second early, you got an extra two.The rule helped keep fighting low that season, but the effect was temporary. After some tweaks to the rule and how it was called, fighting went back to previous levels. One additional point to consider: While this list includes total fights league-wide, the NHL has been adding teams since the early 90s. There were only 21 teams in 1999-91, compared to 30 now. More teams means more games, so all else being equal we'd expect the numbers to be trending upwards. So for example, this year's projected 784 fights would be an average of 0.64 fights per game. That would actually equal the 0.64 average of 1992-93 (when there were 24 teams, and the league played 84 games), and would be far below the per-game averages in other years from the early 90s despite the grand total being comparable. The verdict: My general claim of fighting levels dropping over the past two decades was right. My specific claim about 1993 turns out to be wrong (it's even, but not higher) because I had the misfortune of picking a year that turned out to be an aberration due to the instigator.I suppose that means that I do have to eat a little bit of crow. But I think the overall point stands. Fighting has been trending downwards for a long time, and the numbers back it up. Posted by Down Goes Brown at 10:35 AM 7 comments Labels: fighting Tuesday, January 27, 2009 Damien Cox responds to Down Goes Brown. But he's still wrong. As I joked over at PPP last week, I've been riding a streak of several attempted comments over at Damien Cox's "blog" being rejected by moderators. That streak ended today, and then some -- with Cox actually responding to my comment directly. You can read his original post (about today's Harris-Decima survey that suggest that most Canadian want fighting banned, but most NHL fans support it), my comment, and replies from him and others here. The actual survey report is here (.PDF link).Beyond hilariously referring to me as "Mr. Brown" several times, Damien makes a few points I'll respond to. Damien here. . .interesting that Mr. Brown accuses me of failing to go into sufficient depth. Then again, he says fighting "has been on the decline for 15 years." Not really. It's up 24 per cent from last season. So the past 15 years can be summed up by referencing a trend that's one year old? I stand by my "not enough depth" accusation. But fine, let's look at the stats, courtesy of hockeyfights.com. Fighting is up this year, and has been trending up the past three seasons. But that's largely due to an enormous drop post-lockout. But remember that fighting tends to decrease towards the end of the season, as games become crucial. You would expect fighting numbers to be high mid-season. Let's wait and see how they look at the end of the year. And of course, the hockeyfight.com numbers only go back to 2001. I made reference to the last 15 years. While I can't find any stats on fighting frequency in 1993, I feel pretty safe in saying it was significantly higher than even this season's numbers. If anyone can point to the numbers and they prove me wrong, I'll be glad to eat some crow. Also, you'll always notice that the pro-fighting crowd, when it doesn't get the answer it wants, simply disenfranchises people. Don Cherry will say if you didn't play pro hockey, well, it's none of your business. Mr. Brown, on the other hand, gives more weight to the thoughts of those who identify themselves as NHL fans, dismissing other respondents.Yes, I think the NHL should pay more attention to fans than non-fans. Like any business, you look after your customer base first. Is this really controversial?Put it this way: When they do various customer satisfaction surveys, does the Toronto Star care more about the opinions of long-time subscribers, or Toronto Sun readers? This is just Business 101. It's always nice to expand your audience. You don't risk losing your current customers to do it.What would have been nice is a followup question to the survey: Would you be more or less likely to watch the NHL if fighting was banned. That would have given us some real data to chew on.What would the answer have been? I don't know, but I'm willing to bet that the NHL has done similar customer research. The fact that Gary Bettman says banning fighting isn't even up for discussion might give you some clue as to the results they got. Finally, he talks about success in U.S. markets, or the lack thereof. Again, given that fighting has always been part of the NHL game, we don't know how fans in certain U.S. cities would respond to a league that didn't have fighting. We sure know their lukewarm at best about the NHL with fighting as part of the package. No, we don't know how fans would respond to a league without fighting. But this argument could be applied to any rule change.Would fans like the NHL better if the nets were 15-feet wide and the games were played two-on-two? No? Well, how do you know that? This seems like a pretty transparent ploy by the anti-fighting side. "Just give it a try," they say, "and see how fans respond". What they don't say, of course, is that once fighting is banned in the NHL it will never come back. Even significantly rolling back the instigator rule seems all but impossible now. Imagine if the NHL banned fights and found that fan interest plummeted -- do we really believe Damien and friends would accept a return of fighting? Posted by Down Goes Brown at 7:27 PM 20 comments Labels: damien cox, fighting Sunday, January 25, 2009 Why I'm not ashamed to like fighting I tried. • Getting Links 5 of 5 Pronet Advertising Home About Archives Games Contact Getting Links 5 of 5 Some people do not believe in link building, are not concerned with it, or do not know about it, and in these cases link popularity is achieved naturally over time. They did not concentrate on link building and instead they concentrated on building a good product. Because they did this they naturally got 21,165 incoming links and a lot of search engine love. Effectiveness So how effective is natural link building? It has been effective for many sites such as Solution Watch and Box.net, but it has also been ineffective for other sites. If you have a site with good content or a good service and it cannot be found then it will not get linked to naturally. If you plan on going the natural link building route, make sure you get found. By using marketing or by placing ads (not too natural though) you will get traffic and if people like your site they will link to it. If you do not have an advertising budget you can start spreading the word about your site virally. I personally do not like going with natural link building because it could take a long time before your site gets popular, but unlike the other link building methods it is rare that you will be penalized or banned by the search engines from "natural link growth". << Linkbaiting Enjoy the post?
