The weather seemed perfect, so where did the lightning bolt come from that struck this man. Actually this is a St. Louis resident carelessly shooting a rocket out of a roman candle.? I enjoy shooting off fireworks as much as the?next guy, in fact probably more than the next guy.? Also, I've been known to get excited and be careless.? Maybe we are a little too lenient in allowing fireworks to be shot at will in the city.? As I drove around the city at night this past weekend there were fireworks being shot off from peoples front porches, roof tops, and even out of cars.? While fireworks are undoubtebly better than that old St. Louis tradition of shooting of guns, maybe they should be kept in check even 4th of July weekend. Or maybe I'm just a killjoy. While many Americans are enjoying their day off, the three day weekend, fireworks and backyard bbq鈥檚, the search engines are also showing their love for our independence, with their celebratory logos. Google鈥檚 Fireworks over the lake logo : Yahoo also brings fireworks into their 4th of July logo, with a bit of Old Glory in their animated logo : Ask.com steps away from the light show and reminds us what started the Independence of the US, the Declaration of Independence. Yahoo, Ask and MSN are all happy to display July 4th logos etc to the rest of the world - so why aren鈥檛 Google? The United States 4th July celebrations are a pretty well-known event globally; I seem to recall less well-known country specific holidays and events being highlighted. Google鈥檚 Fireworks over the lake logo : Yahoo also brings fireworks into their 4th of July logo, with a bit of Old Glory in their animated logo : Ask.com steps away from the light show and reminds us what started the Independence of the US, the Declaration of Independence. Yahoo, Ask and MSN are all happy to display July 4th logos etc to the rest of the world - so why aren鈥檛 Google? The United States 4th July celebrations are a pretty well-known event globally; I seem to recall less well-known country specific holidays and events being highlighted. NetWeaver 7.0 supports something called 鈥淔lash Islands鈥, which are basically SWF files inside of Web Dynpro interfaces, which is the user interface for SAP鈥檚 NetWeaver platform. Using ExternalInterface interface, you can pass data from Web Dynpro and a Flex/Flash application. What鈥檚 cool is to see the most cutting edge parts of the Flash Platform being used in an enterprise setting like SAP NetWeaver. Mrinal has an example of Ribbit working, letting you make phone calls from NetWeaver, and there is an example of Cocomo collaboration by Mogens Enevoldsen, which shows off building a social network in SAP. 2009 is going to be a gigantic year for real-time data and collaboration. This is something that, arguably, the Flash Platform does better than anyone else, so I think it鈥檚 going to be an exciting year for Flex developers as they get to show real world examples of things that most people are just starting to think about. The Day Has Come - Adobe Opens up RTMP January 20th, 2009 by ryanstewart I鈥檓 really happy to be able to blog that Adobe is opening up the Real-Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) spec. As a lot of you probably know, RTMP forms a core part of the Flash Platform ecosystem. It is the backbone protocol for delivering real time data and rich media to the Flash Player. Now it will be available for any developer to implement in their own tools, server technologies, or projects. As the Flash Platform has grown, Adobe as a company has pushed harder and harder to be both more innovative and more open. You see this in everything from open source Flex to open specifications like AMF and XMP and PDF. Part of the reason we can continue to open up is the fact that we are able to build value added services to our customers on top of our open technology. RTMP is no different. The Digital Media group at Adobe has done some great things with RTMP. Over the past couple of years they introduced a variety of secure RTMP measures including an encrypted version of RTMP called RTMPE which enabled content providers to protect their content while allowing it to be consumed by the 98% of computers that have the Flash Player. These types of secure RTMP measures are what makes sites like Hulu possible - because the people that create content feel confident they can protect it while making it freely available. These security measures are examples of technologies that Adobe built on top of RTMP, and they aren鈥檛 part of the core spec that we鈥檙e opening up. In general, this is even better news for developers. Adobe spent a lot of work creating those and we think we have a great solution to protect people鈥檚 content. But there are no rules in how developers should implement things like security or peer-to-peer functionality in the open RTMP spec - we鈥檙e leaving it up to developers to decide how they want to implement it. That helps Adobe鈥檚 offerings by expanding the entire RTMP ecosystem and fostering healthy competition for the best solution. Any user of the Flash Platform, from developers to the end users, is going to benefit. So today Adobe is expanding the community around RTMP by continuing to be as open as possible and foster both innovation and healthy competition. When you think about everything RTMP provides - the data, the video, the audio - and think about all of the possibilities that now exist for 3rd parties and developers, it鈥檚 hard not to get excited. The folks at Nvidia are running a contest to see who can come up with the best Pixel Bender filter. NVIDIA wants to see what you can do to make use of their GPU, so they figured a great thing to do would be to give Pixel Bender a spin. They seem to be focusing on Pixel Bender in Photoshop CS4, but what鈥檚 great about it is you鈥檒l be able to use that same filter in After Effects CS4 or the Flash Player. If you haven鈥檛 seen it, ou should spend some time on the FWA site. It鈥檚 far and away the best collection of Flash content out there and you鈥檒l come away feeling inspired. This year鈥檚 winner was The Eco Zoo by a few agencies: McCann Erickson Japan, ENJIN Inc, and ROXIK. The site uses some great PaperVision effects and is a really, really fun use of Flash. I blogged about this earlier, but what I thought was interesting is that Andrew mentions the site for the folks that are 鈥渋n charge of all the inaugural activities at the capitol鈥 - the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies - and they have a .gov address, so they mean business. They鈥檙e offering closed captioning of the entire thing. How are they delivering it? Flash. And what鈥檚 that extension on their site? That鈥檚 right, it鈥檚 ColdFusion! I need to spend more time with Lee. I didn鈥檛 actually get to many of these slides because I dove into the demo and answered questions, so if you were there, they probably won鈥檛 look very familiar. Making Money with AIR - TweetDeck Gets Funding January 16th, 2009 by ryanstewart Congrats to Iain of TweetDeck! According to TechCrunch they have secured about $500,000 of angel funding in a very, very tough economy from Betaworks. According to TechCrunch: TweetDeck is the work of one man, British programmer Iain Dodsworth, who says the TweetDeck Adobe AIR-powered and hence cross-platform desktop application has been downloaded 250,000 times since he launched it over last Summer, and that users are pushing 120,000 messages a day to their Twitter followers using the software. Iain and TweetDeck are a great example of how you can quickly and easily create a desktop application with a great user interface and make a big impact. Iain did a superb job with the UI, and chose a great platform. I continue to be really, really excited about what AIR means for developers and end users. Flash Video Powering The Presidential Inauguration January 16th, 2009 by ryanstewart On the podcast today Cot茅 and I were talking about the inauguration as an online event. There鈥檚 a ton going on. Almost every major site is going to be streaming the inaugural ceremonies. But there are many different ways people are doing it. For the most part, as you鈥檇 expect, it鈥檚 being done in Flash. Basically all of the major media sites - CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, Fox News, etc. - are all going to be using Flash. CNN is even going to be inserting ads into the live stream which is pretty cool. Oddly, just like the Olympics, the 鈥渙fficial鈥 site is going with Silverlight. But like we saw with the Olympics, I鈥檓 pretty sure most of the viewing is going to be done in Flash because ultimately the barrier to entry is so small, everyone has it, and Flash just works. As I told Cot茅, I think this is going to be fascinating from a number crunching standpoint. With so many options to watch the video, where are people going to go? And how will penetration of the technology used to stream the content affect that? With the Olympics, there was just one way Americans could watch the event - with Silverlight - but for the inauguration, people will be able to select any news media outlet and any format they want. I think it鈥檚 going to be a great mini experiment in how much penetration really matters as well as how much the brand of various media outlets matter. Making Money with AIR - TweetDeck Gets Funding January 16th, 2009 by ryanstewart Congrats to Iain of TweetDeck! According to TechCrunch they have secured about $500,000 of angel funding in a very, very tough economy from Betaworks. According to TechCrunch: TweetDeck is the work of one man, British programmer Iain Dodsworth, who says the TweetDeck Adobe AIR-powered and hence cross-platform desktop application has been downloaded 250,000 times since he launched it over last Summer, and that users are pushing 120,000 messages a day to their Twitter followers using the software. Iain and TweetDeck are a great example of how you can quickly and easily create a desktop application with a great user interface and make a big impact. Iain did a superb job with the UI, and chose a great platform. I continue to be really, really excited about what AIR means for developers and end users. Great programming model, powerful runtime, and all of it is cross-platform on Mac, Windows, and Linux. It鈥檚 cool stuff. Posted in Adobe AIR having 10 comments ? Flash Video Powering The Presidential Inauguration January 16th, 2009 by ryanstewart On the podcast today Cot茅 and I were talking about the inauguration as an online event. There鈥檚 a ton going on. Almost every major site is going to be streaming the inaugural ceremonies. But there are many different ways people are doing it. For the most part, as you鈥檇 expect, it鈥檚 being done in Flash. Basically all of the major media sites - CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, Fox News, etc. - are all going to be using Flash. CNN is even going to be inserting ads into the live stream which is pretty cool. Oddly, just like the Olympics, the 鈥渙fficial鈥 site is going with Silverlight. But like we saw with the Olympics, I鈥檓 pretty sure most of the viewing is going to be done in Flash because ultimately the barrier to entry is so small, everyone has it, and Flash just works. As I told Cot茅, I think this is going to be fascinating from a number crunching standpoint. With so many options to watch the video, where are people going to go? And how will penetration of the technology used to stream the content affect that? With the Olympics, there was just one way Americans could watch the event - with Silverlight - but for the inauguration, people will be able to select any news media outlet and any format they want. I think it鈥檚 going to be a great mini experiment in how much penetration really matters as well as how much the brand of various media outlets matter. Eventually, perhaps 5 or 10 years later, scientists would publish the results in scientific journals. The tax-paying public rarely benefitted from the majority of this funded research until many many years after it was completed. Complex academic systems of reward, and a hierarchy of professional and administrative status had arisen out of that system, with every player extracting some value from that information before it was published. By 1996, the Internet had changed the public citizen. They were no longer compliant customers of inaccessible medical professionals. They had become insatiable consumers of health information, and they used to Internet to find and re-publish the medical information they and others needed. We served them by building web sites and systems for disseminating medical and health information over the web. A very large part of that effort was SEO, especially after Google changed search. I left the non-profit world in 2003 to pursue my passion for the competitive web, SEO, and citizen media. Competitive Webmastering. We are now on the verge of a new era of independence for commercial webmasters. The tools and methods are evolving faster than ever before. The opportunities are abundant for those willing to work hard and maintain enough transparency to survive, yet enough stealth to compete. Those who can remain competitive. But who wants to wait a whole year just to do the demo again? That鈥檚 why we鈥檙e working on the fine art of watermelon carving鈥 with the aid of a tiny chemical reaction鈥 okay, it鈥檚 an explosion. We just substituted a big, juicy watermelon in place of the pumpkin and pulled the trigger. Since the walls of a watermelon are not necessarily as strong as a pumpkin, sometimes the whole darn thing explodes鈥 but that adds to the fun. Check out the video. Rose tells me about an adventure race in Taiping with no mountain biking involved. And that there are only 8 teams in the women's category. And that prize money was up till 5th place. I did some simple math and realised i'd be silly to miss this opportunity.So on Saturday morning, after borrowing heaps of climbing equipment from Beatrice, Lydia and myself, alongside Am went to Kamunting town to race in this Ironbound Challenge. The name itself, sounds pretty daunting and if I had known any better, I would never have underestimated it at all.The race consisted of trail running, uphill road running, rafting, river scrambling, abseiling, kayaking, orienteering and some mystery tests. To put it simply, the race was really really really challenging. The trail running was like non of the other trails I have trekked. None of my previous trail running adventure races even came close to this running route and for that I give the officials two thumbs up! I had heaps of fun running through the trails, and getting myself slashed, graced, poked, gashed and whipped in so many places. Loved every moment of it. Dennis thinks i'm a masochist now. heh.River scrambling. Now this I really enjoyed. It was a first time for me and honestly, it was one of those things that had crossed my wildly wandering mind to do knowing well that people would think of it as the craziest thing to do. If I saw a shooting rapid river, with its crystal clear water gushing through ever so quickly, crashing and sloshing across rocks of all shapes and sizes, kinda like the picture below, I'd think to myself, Wouldn't it be fun to run across that, tiptoeing on rock after rock? and i'd chuckle to myself because the idea of it is absurd. Just like i do, when I see a mountain skyline and imagine a silhouette of myself prancing along the tops of it in the middle of the night.But SNR Adventures made my little daydream come true that day and made us go through probably 5 kms of river scrambling. And, by golly, did i CRASH. I slipped and flipped and crashed my knees and shins and ankles into the rocks like a Wild E Coyote cartoon. And yes it was mighty painful. But oh so fun! I loved every moment of it! no i'm not a masochist!so anyway, the race went on pretty long. We got lost somewhere, made some new friends and managed to pull through everything till it came to the orienteering part. The race had a cutoff time of 4 pm and eventhough we wanted to finish all our checkpoints, marshalls were after us on motorbikes asking us to go back to the finish. So, we were forced to give up and go back.What happened after that was a bit of a mood dampener. We were actually in 2nd place almost all the way, with Fong's team being in the first place. But some miscommunicated information made it possible for 2 other teams that were behind us to clinch the first and second prizes while we got nothing. Haha...it was my first time actually debating and arguing for a prize. I've never been so sure of myself. But I guess there is no one to be blamed in this. At the end of the day everyone wanted a fair and just race and it was a pity this had to happen. I just hope we are given due recognition for our efforts, that's all. Our results are yet to be determined.Anyway, Lydia Tan was a greaaaaat partner. You should so see her on the river scrambling section. That's a pro river scrambler if i ever saw one. People say we're very similar. So it's only natural that we either compliment each other or start battling at loggerheads with each other. Lucky for me, it was the former. We made a pretty good team. An adventure race without mountain biking is all that I can ask for before going back to Auckland and when there was a potential to win I guess I just couldn't resist!So everything that needed to be done transpired in exactly 24 hours. I got myself a teammate, sold my GE30K bib, called organizers to register, made arrangements for transport & accomodation (which came with the teammate) and even squeezed in a training session. This has got to be the most last minute decision to race in my history of racing. And perhaps it is all this spontaneity, all this "in the nick of time" events and "lucky me" incidents that made this race all the more attractive.So I'm about to leave with Lydia Tan, my new teammate, for the Ironbound Challenge 2009 in Taiping, Perak!
