No comments. Some of you have been asking for details on the Rhapsody transition. We’ll be able to share more next week, but in the interim I wanted to give you a sense of the broader relationship between us and Rhapsody and some of the things we’ll be working on this summer. I was privileged recently to attend the launch of our partner Rhapsody’s MP3 Store. We’ll be working with them to bring MP3 purchase to users of Yahoo! Music. Yahoo! has been a strong backer of DRM-free music for the past two years, since Dave Goldberg, VP and GM of Yahoo! Music at the time, told the world that DRM had failed. A year ago, Ian Rogers declared that we would no longer invest resources in a fundamentally broken system of DRM that users had rejected. Now, we’re happy to bring MP3 downloads to our site so users can purchase any one of over 5 million songs to

My new website is online! Please take a few minutes to check it out and let me know what you think! http://www.temlynwriting.com Posted in Uncategorized on July 27th, 2008 5 Comments ? New Web Site I will be publishing a new website soon. Stay tuned! Posted in Just stuff, Uncategorized on July 27th, 2008 2 Comments Busy week(s) So I didn’t get a post up earlier in the week as I had hoped. In fact, I’ve been swarmed with a few gigs that are going to keep me working 9-5 pretty much until the end of the month. I’m finishing up edits on one manuscript today, and have two more large editing projects due before April 1st. Additionally, I have a magazine deadline coming up on March 27th, but that’s pretty much finished, and only needs some formatting. I’m also taking an online course that I’m working furiously to keep up with, and that will end in a few weeks. I’m pretty much booked up for the rest of the month, and a new contract editing gig with a regional construction company will begin in April. I’m also getting ready for my mom to visit! Yay! She’ll be coming to stay with us for a week in the middle of April, and I am absolutely thrilled! I think this may be the break she needs after my father’s recent death, and, well, I just miss her. How distracted can I be? Well, I’ve had my husband block access to Twitter from 8am-5pm, so I can work without refreshing Twitter every five minutes. (It was very tempting during SXSW, when I was reading all the b5media participants’ posts.) So, I’ve got another post coming up to inspire some conversation this weekend/next week. I’ll be around, but the next two weeks are going to be busy! Posted in Personal Life, Writing Work on March 14th, 2008 4 Comments Just you wait Oooh, boy. Have I got some posts for you. We’re talking about some doozies! Between typos in grocery stores and e-mail inquiries from people who obviously aren’t reading my website before they send me e-mail… I’ve got about half a dozen posts in the works. Gah! I need a massage. I’m all tense. This is what dealing with certain clients does to me. Stay tuned for Monday! In the meantime, Calgon, take me away! Posted in Grammar Check!, Peeves, Venting on March 8th, 2008 No Comments Happy National Grammar Day! Today is National Grammar Day! The Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar (SPOGG) and MSN Encarta have designated March 4, 2008 as National Grammar Day. How can you participate? Here’s what Martha Brockenbrough, founder of the National Grammar Day website, had to say: Speak well! Write well! And on March 4, march forth and spread the word. If you see a sign with a catastrophic apostrophe, send a kind note to the storekeeper. If your local newscaster says “Between you and I,” set him straight with a friendly e-mail. Want to wear your support for grammar? Check out the great goodies offered from the SPOGG gift shop! In honor of National Grammar Day I’ve created a Grammar & Punctuation blogroll on the right side of my blog. It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally there. Do you have some grammar pet peeves? I have a few, but one that sticks with me is nauseated versus nauseous. Blame that one on my college roommate, S, who is an absolute grammar snob! Grammar Girl on nauseated versus nauseous: It’s common to hear people say they’re nauseous when their stomach is upset, but language sticklers hold that nauseous means to induce nausea, whereas nauseated means you feel sick. So when you’re describing how sick you feel, you should say you are nauseated; when you’re describing something that makes you sick, you should call it nauseous. Strunk and White agree that the adjective nauseous means “sickening to contemplate,” and the adjective nauseated means “sick to the stomach.” Strunk goes on to say: Do not, therefore, say, “I feel nauseous,” unless you are sure you have that effect on others. (I’m not a grammar snob, but rather a grammar educator, so I understand that “nauseous” may indeed become the more acceptable term in years to come. Still, because of my roommate, I can’t help but think of Strunk & White’s definition every time I hear someone use the word.) My husband is a bit dyslexic, and calls me his built-in spell-check. I’m always helping him with distinguishing between “there, their, and they’re” and “too and to.” Misuse and abuse of apostrophes bothers me, too — I catch examples of these all the time on store signs (e.g., its and it’s). Also, “could of” instead of “could have.” It’s “have,” not “of”! What’s your “favorite” grammar goof or pet peeve? Which grammar goof is your pet peeve? (Edited to add: Good catch on the “favorite peeve,” Lori! Least favorite doesn’t seem to work, either. Hmm. How about “most irritating”? See my edit above.) Mrs. Write Right, Word Therapist, is a proud partner with the official National Grammar Day website. Lee Brimelow on Flash | Retouching Eyes Tutorial | Contest Time Living In Layers | By RC | October 20, 2008 | 2 Comments Happy Monday everyone! First and foremost, thanks so much for the feedback on the recent Layers TV episode (it’s listed over there on the right, or you can subscribe to it using iTunes). I figured a quick peek in the bag would give me the opportunity to show off the things that I generally carry around in my camera bag, as well as talk a little bit about some tips and tricks insofar as digital photography. Again, many thanks for the request for the tutorial. Remember you can always send us any requests for tutorials using the Contact page - as well as by adding yourself to our new Layers Magazine Facebook Page and Twitter. You guys rock Lee Brimelow on Flash CS4 I’m a very big fan of Lee Brimelow over at the Flash Blog. Over the last couple of weeks he’s been adding tutorials to our site, talking about the cool things inside of Flash CS4 over at his gotoAndLearn() site, and let me tell you - it is awesome. If there is one app that I am very, very excited to upgrade, Flash would have to be it. The changes that have been made to fit designers are wonderful and I can’t wait to see what all of you start designing with it. Lee’s got a great overview video on CS4 stuff as well as some cool things to happen with Motion Presets so make sure you check him out. Lee rocks! Layers Blog Winner | NVIDIA Brings It | Fireworks to Flash Tutorial Living In Layers | By RC | October 17, 2008 | 2 Comments Happy Friday everyone. Couple of quick points here that I wanted to mention. Layers TV and Layers Blog Winners A big congratulations goes out to Alton Carrol for winning this week’s Layers Blog Contest. We very much appreciate you guys joining us and participating in the contest - so it’s always great that someone wins. Hey.. you never know.. maybe next week it will be you! You won’t know until you enter. So be sure to check it out next week. NVIDIA is all over the Creative Suite We’ve got to give it to NVIDIA here. This week really has me gawking at their site for what is to come for a couple of reasons: I own a Macbook Pro And Want To Switch Already: I have the Multi Touch Macbook Pro, and this thing rocks. However, this week, the new Macbook Pro was announced: Glass touch interface, *yawn* Cool shiny screen *yawn* DisplayPort with DUAL NVIDIA cards?!?! Yeah.. that got my attention. The new Macbook Pro now has a GeForce 9400M GT for the more conservative, while reserving a GeForce 9600M GT for any kind of heavy lifting that’s needed (3D, Video, Motion Graphics). Add the 320GB 7200RPM drive and max RAM, and you have a drool machine for me. READ MORE ? Previous Entries ? ? Layers TV Podcast on Everything Adobe? ("Cameo" means "star," right?) Well, <ahref=>the popular telenovela now concludes:In an effort to pull all stops in advance of election day, *Voto Latino*, the leading non-partisan Latino youth voter engagement group, will release the latest installment of their hit web-only PSA campaign which stars Rosario Dawson as Carmen and Wilmer Valderrrama (also co-director) as Rodrigo—two lovers about to be wed by a priest, played by Perez Hilton. "La Boda" marks the last episode to release before the November 4th election. Conceived by *Voto Latino* as a parody of a "telenovéla," a traditional soap opera format familiar to Latino households, "La Pasión de la Decisión" launched earlier this year to kick-start the organization's voter registration efforts. It has received close to 100 million impressions, helping Voto Latino register nearly 30,000 young Latinos since January 2008 in key battleground states, through the Voto Latino's web registration form. By Election Day, they are on track to double their initial 2008 voter registration goals and tout web and mobile outreach as effective and influential. "It's the Latino community's answer to 'The Great Schlep'," said *Rosario Dawson*, co-founder of the organization. "We have taken your grandmother's telenovéla, put it online, and made it relevant across cultures and across generations to help encourage conversations among Latino families." Here's my starring segment: LA Pasion De La Decision Episode 3 Posted at 05:59 AM in governance | Permalink | Comments (1) | TrackBack (0) October 20, 2008 You2Gov.com offers a step to networked democracy? Politicians, particularly Congressmen, tell me that the mass form-letter emails they get, from unknown parties, aren't useful. What they want are emails from constituents, preferably not form letters, but that might be okay. Well, looks like that might already be available at a newish site, You2Gov.com:At You2Gov.com, registered users can log on and find 1) up to the minute news stories and clips; 2) Forums where political discussions take place; and 3) a tool that allows you to call, email or write your elected officials with just one click. Senators and Congressman benefit too. You2Gov requires its users to provide their name, mailing address and zip code on communications to Congress so it can be verified that the writers are actually their constituents. Unless such proper user identification is provided, You2Gov will not allow the communications to be sent. Better yet, for those elected officials, they won't be receiving thousands of "form" letters. The You2Gov generated letters come from registered users that took the time to log on, research the issues, and write their own letter. Note the need for authentication; this form doesn't prove the sender is a constituent, but moves pretty far in that direction. There's a lot more on the Sunlight Foundation blog, but here's the gist: Entering Congress in 2007, Gillibrand was at the vanguard of transparency innovation in Congress. She was the first congressional candidate to sign Sunlight’s Punch Clock pledge, a promise to post her daily schedule once she had taken office, and to post her schedule (which has been archived at Congresspedia). She was also one of the first to post her earmarks, earmark requests, and personal financial disclosures to her official web site without a requirement to do so. Gillibrand was also a chief proponent of requiring Inspector General reports to be posted online. We truly hope that she carries this spirit of transparency with her to the Senate. Hey, this is a much bigger deal than anyone else has reported. Note that Obama's second day Executive Order was all about this kind of transparency. She's fully onboard with this, was a pioneer for years. Here's the gist, from two of the smartest people about government transparency and accountability. He's starting to make our government accountable to us. Ellen Miller writes on the Sunlight Foundation blog: On Day One, President Obama issued new Executive Orders and memoranda – including an Executive Order on Ethics Commitments by Executive Branch Personnel, a memoranda on Transparency and Open Government and one on the Freedom of Information Act – indicating a dramatic break in the executive branch’s stance toward being held accountable to the public it serves. Roll Call called today’s action by the new president “sweeping,“and we agree. Clearly, creating greater transparency in government is a high priority for the new administration. This is a good beginning and it represents real change. One of Ellen's peers is Micah Sifry, writing on TechPresident.com: The Obama Administration took its first major steps toward implementing its promise to make government more open and transparent, with two presidential memoranda covering freedom of information, transparency and open government. The first memo directing all agencies to "adopt a presumption in favor of disclosure." This is a 180-degree turn from the policies of the Bush Administration. Most interesting for e-democracy fans: The memo says "all agencies should use modern technology to inform citizens about what is known and done by their Government." ... Obama is calling on the federal government to explore and embrace the wisdom of crowds and to greatly expand the "collaborative government" experiments that have been popping up inside and around the bureaucracy like mushrooms after a storm. Folks, this is real, and a really big deal. Posted at 02:40 AM | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0) January 21, 2009 It's squirrel appreciation day! Just heard about this. My work in the last 8 or 9 years has been heavily focused around education, whether I’ve been commissioning and editing technical books to help people create cool stuff with technology, training new employees at the various companies I’ve worked for, or editing and writing tutorial articles to help people use Opera’s software. I am passionate about the Web too, and a big believer in open web standards. I wanted to do my bit to help make the Web a better place, and I think this comes back to education, whether that’s teaching people how to collaborate and have more respect for one another, or teaching them how to make their web sites work across platforms and devices, and be accessible to people with disabilities. Web standards are key to the latter, so I decided to try putting my time and energy into something that would help increase the adoption of web standards on the Web today and in the future. It has been floating around my head for a while now, but it has finally come to fruition at Opera—many thanks to my wonderful employers for paying me to do this! One of my dreams has finally been realised. So in this article I introduce to you the product of a lot of hard work over the last several months (by myself and a lot of other people)—the Web Standards Curriculum, a course designed to give anyone a solid grounding in web design/development, no matter who they are—it is completely free to use, accessible, and assumes no previous knowledge. I am mainly aiming this at universities, as I believe the standards of education in web standards to be somewhat lacking at many universities. I’ve heard tales of students being marked down for using web standards in their coursework, because the marking schemes are so outdated; I’ve also heard tales of employers despairing because when they interview university graduates for web–related positions, they find out that the graduates really don’t have a clue about real world web development. If you’re at a progressive university that does teach web standards in a reasonable fashion, then I tip my hat to you—get in touch! In this article I’ll cover the following: Why web standards? Here I briefly discuss the advantages of using web standards, why they are not being adopted like they should, and how my course aims to tackle these issues How the course is structured. What it says on the tin; this section also talks about how educators should think about presenting the material to use it effectively in courses Who should use this course? When I say “anyone”, who do I mean, exactly? The table of contents. Skip to this bit if you’re fed up with my waffle and want to get straight to the learning. Acknowledgements Contact me Why web standards? The main reasons that adopting web standards in your web design/development work is such a good idea are expanded on in article 4, but I’ll go through them briefly here, to set the scene. Using web standards confers the following benefits: Efficiency of code: As you’ll learn throughout the course, a lot of best practice web standards usage is all about reusing code—you can separate your HTML content from your stylistic (CSS) and behavioural (JavaScript) information, allowing your file sizes to be kept small, and code to be written only once, and then reused wherever it is needed. Ease of maintenance: This follows closely on from the last point—if you can write HTML only once, and then apply styles and behaviour wherever they are needed using classes and functions, then if you need to change something at a later date, you can just make the change in one place and it propagates throughout the entire web site, rather than having to specify that change everywhere that it is needed! Accessibility: The next two points are closely related—one of the big issues on the Web is making web sites accessible to everyone, no matter who they are, regardless of circumstance. This includes making web sites usable by people with disabilities such as blindness/visual impairment and motor impairment (ie, people who have restricted movement, and might not be able to use their hands properly, or at all). By using web standards and best practices, you’ll be able to make your web sites usable by this significant group of the web audience with no extra effort. Device compatibility: by this, I mean ensuring that your web sites will work not only across different platforms—ie Windows, Mac, Linux—but also alternative browsing devices, which these days can include mobile phones, TVs and games consoles. These devices have limitations such as screen size, processing power, control mechanisms available and more, but the good news is that again, using web standards and best practices, you can pretty much guarantee that your web sites will work on most of these devices. There are more mobile phones in the world than PCs, a lot of which are Internet–capable, so can you or your clients afford to miss out on this market? For more on mobile web development, check out some of the dedicated articles on dev.opera.com. Web crawlers/search engines: By this, we are talking about what is termed search engine optimization—the practice of making your web sites as visible as possible to the so–called web crawlers that trawl the web and index web sites, and therefore giving you better search rankings on sites such as Google. There is a science to this (see SEO articles such as Intelligent site structure for better SEO! and Semantic HTML and Search Engine Optimization) but yet again, just by using web standards you will make your site a lot more visible on Google, Yahoo!, etc., which is good for business. Even with all these advantages however, most sites on the Web still do not follow web standards, and many web developers working today still use bad, outdated practices. “Why?” You ask. There are a number of reasons for this—people will cite lack of education, company policy, not needing to learn standards because they are getting paid anyway, it’s too hard to learn, standards support in web browsers…let’s look at each one of these in more detail, and then look at the counter arguments, to try to get rid of any excuse for not adopting/learning standards. Lack of education: There is an issue here, but this is one of the main reasons this course was created. A lot of universities don’t teach web standards in their web–related courses, and a lot of curriculums tend to contain outdated practices, and are hard to change due to bureaucracy. Books and training courses tend to be expensive. But wait! Now we’ve provided a course that’s free, and are running around universities etc to help make these changes for them, so there’s really now no excuse here. Company policy: There is no doubt that some companies/institutions still have really old and outdated web sites. They may have policies that force their employees to use outdated browsers, but it is getting better, and now there is a free course available to easily show how to make changes, things should improve further. Upgrading a web site to modern standards encourages companies to upgrade the browsers that they use, as sites will not look as good in outdated browsers (although they should still work in older browsers). Companies should encourage their customers to upgrade as well. There is sound business reasoning as well—sites that use web standards, as explained above, will yield better search engine results and be accessible to people with disabilities and users of alternative devices—can companies afford to ignore this audience? “I don’t need to learn them!”: I know some developers will sit there and say “but I’m using outdated practices and still getting paid—so why do I need to bother with this new stuff?” As explained above, it makes your code more efficient, easier to write, and easier to maintain. And it allows you to write modern code that is accessible and usable on alternative devices—isn’t that exciting? It will also make your skillset more future–proof, and make you capable of earning more. A lot of companies are requesting skills in web standards these days. “It’s too hard to learn!”: Rubbish. After digesting some of this course, you’ll realize how easy it is to pick up the basics of using web standards, whether you’re new to web development/design, or an existing web person upgrading your skillset. It is about as hard as using the old, outdated bad methods, which isn’t very, and it confers so many advantages over the old ways. Standards support in browsers: Standards support in browsers used to differ greatly, which made getting web sites to work across different browsers a nightmare. But those days are gone—modern browsers all have decent web standards support. Support is still sometimes needed for old browsers that don’t have such good browser support, but by using modern best practices, you can ensure that users of those browsers will still have a reasonable user experience. So as you can see, there’s really not any excuse to not adopt web standards in your web development work. At least if you are coming to this course from the point of view of a beginner, you are starting off on the right foot and learning b

Now it has more than $200,000, and last Wednesday it unveiled its advertisements on 800 buses across Britain. "There's probably no God," the advertisements say. "Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."…..]  In a time when the world needs God more than ever before, they managed to rise more than $200.000 campaign to deny God’s existence. Fantastic! Condemnation and critics have been delivered to Israel’s brutal acts on Palestinian’s Gaza. Here in Indonesia, Palestine-Israel war is a sensitive issue for most of the students, particularly those who associated with Islamic organization. Students are now gathering up to condemn Israel, burned Israel’s flag along with the US star-stripped flag. Some of the Islamic fundamentalist group here in Indonesia even organized an open-recruitment for those who want to volunteer—not for humanitarian purposes, but to help Palestinians wipe Israel out of the map. It is reported that Gazprom has reduced its natural oil export to Ukraine by 90 million cubic meters per day. That amount is approximately the average daily consumption of the country which currently is at the peak of its winter consumption. This incident occurred after negotiation over prices and transit fees unraveled between Ukraine government and representative of Gazprom Russia. The most disturbing issue of EU’s energy dependence is Russia’s carelessness to use pipelines as political instruments. Russian “pipeline politics” date back to 1990, when Moscow interrupted energy supplies to the Baltic States in attempt to stifle their independence movements. The energy weapon was again used against the Baltic States in 1992, in retaliation for their demands that Russia remove its remaining military forces from the region. Read the rest of this entry ? It is obvious that Obama was on top of the list from the very beginning. For all his record-breaking achievement and breath-taking moments in the election, it is the notion that he inspired the world and raised hope to millions of people with his infamous campaign theme of â€CHANGE’ that he deserves all these praises. Now as the inauguration day comes near, the question remains on how well can Obama fulfill the high expectation that the world has for him. With all the mess the Bush left for him, Obama will have to work really hard to clean it up. Read the rest of this entry ? So I scrambled the internet and found some interesting stuffs here. Rec’d from co-worker this list of 21 funny statements made by pilots or attendents in the cabin of commercial airliners. Here are the top three… 1. On a Southwest flight 245 (SW has no assigned seating, you just sit where you want) passengers were apparently having a hard time choosing, when a flight attendant announced, “People, people we’re not picking out furniture here, find a seat and get in it!” 2. On a Continental Flight with a very “senior” flight attendant crew, the pilot said, “Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve reached cruising altitude and will be turning down the cabin lights. This is for your comfort and to enhance the appearance of your flight attendants.” 3. On landing, the stewardess said, “Please be sure to take all of your belongings. If you’re going to leave anything, please make sure it’s something we’d like to have. 4. “There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are only 4 ways out of this airplane” Read the rest of this entry ? Most of it because of this whole PRAKDIP thingy; which I’m about to write now The Diplomacy in Practice (or PRAKDIP in bahasa) is actually one of UNPAR’s International Relations subject, which basically a simulation of an international conference. The similar activity itself is widely known as Model United Nations which has been practiced by many universities all over the world. In Indonesia, UNPAR is one of the first (and might be the only) university who put this diplomacy-in-practice into its intra-curriculum. The activities of this PRAKDIP (I copied it from Wikipedia to put it simple) is aims to educate participants about civics, effective communication, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. In Model UN, students take on roles as foreign diplomats and participate in a simulated session of an intergovernmental organization (IGO). Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems. Read the rest of this entry ? Before the event, Vanessa Fox came up to me and told me to blog about her. She doesn't work for Google anymore, though, so I don't know what she wants from us. Go away, Vanessa. I just took 8 pictures of Vanessa and she had her eyes closed in all but one of them. Wake up, girl. (Vanessa posing) Now, Danny and Marissa sit down and they're about to talk about really cool stuff at Google. Danny: How is the impact of universal search? Marissa: We're really happy about how it turned out. We changed a lot of the infrastructure. The users seem to be really liking it and finding what they're looking for. We know we have a way to go, though, but we wanted to go beyond 10 links and give better, richer answers. Search results should be like an encyclopedia - images, text, and other resources. Today we have images, video, news, and books integrated into the results. We will also try to pull in other results into the main SERPs. Danny: It's been interesting to see how the pages are evolving with AJAX like clicking on PlusBoxes in maps. Marissa: We have a few bells and whistles that we call zippies and are working really well. Danny: Do you think we'll get a lot of other results in time? Marissa: Yes, we're looking at things that are a lot more radical. Danny: Are we having more sources going into Google Video? Marissa: We want to organize the world's information to make it useful. It didn't make sense to organize videos just from Google Video and YouTube, so we're looking hard to incorporate other video properties. It's up to the content creator to decide where to put their videos. We want to find videos from all these places. Danny: Google Personalized Search ramped up and in May, web history was launched. How's that been going? Marissa: In the future of search, there are a lot of changes. We get better every single day. In 10-15 years, we will be better than we are now. We think we can see more relevance for the users and help them find their answers faster by knowing more about them. Many people are opting in for it. It's really interested to experiment with the new science of personalized search and how we use this data to get better relevancy. Marissa: We're trying to do this for ads and for search. They really need to match. The query and response should be the same. We want parity in the way we match ads and the user results so that people don't have to reconstruct their queries in artificial ways. Danny: What personalized options will be available in the future? Marissa: We're looking at things like locations, address books, web history, and we're asking our users to opt in for these features. Once we get those explicit opt-ins, we want to experiment to achieve more relevancy for personalized results. Danny: One of the comparisons is with Amazon - when you searched for music years ago and Amazon still tries to assume that I'm interested in it. How do you want to deal with that? Marissa: We want transparency and control. You can look at the information that Google has to personalize - the searches you've done, what you've clicked on, etc. You can remove that to reverse the effect of that particular action. Danny: What about subtle clicks? Marissa: That's a hard question. We've wondered if we should mark the results for personalization. But there's a spectrum. How much personalized results are being affected? If we mark personalized results and non-personalized results, it isn't the right model. We're looking at marking some of the results, but it's a gray area for us right now in how you should treat them. Danny polls the audience: how many people want to have their personalized results marked? (A good number of hands goes up.) Danny: You can't toggle results in the webmaster end for personalization. But Matt said you can add &pws=0 at the end of the URL? Can we have a button instead? Marissa: We've looked at having a toggle. Our view is that personalized results will become the default in the future because they provide a relevance boost to that user. We want personalized results. I think it's a valid request though. Danny: We're going through a lot of privacy which was kicked off by Google. Now everyone is doing that but you are still building detailed profiles of users. How do you deal with that? Marissa: For users who want a relevance boost, we're having people sign up for a service. As part of that signup, they agree to privacy policies which is there to protect them. We may have a longer history because you've opted in. We're ultimately putting these on systems that are more protected. Danny: We touched in the personalized experience and there's the iGoogle portal. You've had the growth in gadgets and now we have Facebook that people are saying is the new Google. How does Google view Facebook? Marissa: We're really happy with iGoogle and Gadgets. I see a lot of parallels with that and Facebook applications. With that said, there's a similar vain between both programs: they're open platforms. It's not necessarily a walled garden. The power of these programs is that anyone can create a gadget or a Facebook application. That's why they're both growing. Both provide a great opportunity to build a deeper relationship with users and also this is great for distribution. I have a Netflix queue and it's part of my homepage experience in iGoogle. It's a robust form of advertising. It's not a small piece of text; you can provide functionality and information that's responsive and interactive with the user. Danny: Do you have to go out and have a bunch of profiles on MySpace, Facebook, and LinkedIn to understand these services? Marissa: I have profiles on all these services. Danny: I wanted to know about other search engines. Wikia will be coming out to compete with Google. Jason Calacanis, a great friend of the SEO community (everyone laughs) decided to create Mahalo. How does Google deal with the human search engines? Marissa: Google is painted as the algorithmic purist. That's not our view. The algorithmic approach is important. That said, once you had the basic algorithm, you can layer human elements into it. We have properties like Google Co-op where people can label items and Google Notebook which has human interaction. But you need to layer the two together - algorithms and human elements to achieve relevance. Danny: Can you tell us about adding comments to Google News? Marissa: Google news has always been focused on providing clusters. We want to provide multiple viewpoints. Krishna, the engineer behind this, wanted people to see one story and also what other people were saying behind that topic or organized presentations. We want people to see that comments. Now only can people read these published articles but they can also read the commentary, so that's why we wanted it to be compelling. Danny: I wanted to shift over to Google Local. I wanted to talk about the usability in terms of fun or voyeurism of Google Street View? Marissa: Street view is all about finding things faster. It's nice to be able to see what a store looks like from a street address. We want people to find things faster. The product is not about looking at faces or license plates. We're going to blur the faces and license plates. The spirit of street view is more about understanding what places look like. Danny: A hot vertical is mobile search. Tell us about that. Marissa: Google is seeing more and more mobile activity. Mobile saw this big increase. It's clear to see that people are switching off their computers and switching on their cell phones. This is true even with the iPhone - there was a big bump. We launched 1-800-GOOG-411. There's a nice integration with that and the iPhone. You get free 411 service. From that service, you can search for a particular business names, categories of that business, and related results. When you're on the phone with them, you can say "Map It," it sends you the map in an SMS message. It's very interactive. (She illustrates it on her iPhone. She has an iPhone. Cool.) It's a particularly great application to get a lot of information. Later, Danny asks Marissa what her favorite non-Google property is. She says Facebook, particularly with the way you are able to connect to people and write about the connections. Then, Danny asks Marissa what her favorite Google property is. She says she cannot do that because it's like choosing a favorite child. But she likes web search, Book Search, and Google Desktop. Like The Story? Vote For It On Yahoo Buzz! Or On Sphinn! Over the weekend, I heard Jay Rosen speak, he's one of the commentators on new media I respect most. He used the phrase "culture of participation" and this crystallized a lot of my thinking about why Wikipedia and craigslist work. There's the "culture of trust" thing, very important. That trust is generated where the people running stuff continuously engage with the people who use the stuff, where everyone can participate. Not everyone will, but it's the genuine opportunity that matters. David Weinberger, another commentator I respect highly, once captured this more metaphorically, saying "Google feels like ours (even though it legally belongs to its shareholders)... Weblogs feel like their ours while online columns do not. The Mac feels like it's ours... Craigslist feels like ours..." Now, combine the "culture of participation" thing with Obama's networked grassroots movement. I think that's the new kind of government we're moving to, complementing representative democracy with active grassroots involvement. More to come... The previous administration hid much about what they were doing, the best example being the "missing" email situation. Transparency means that they tell us what really goes on in government, save for genuinely sensitive information. Perhaps most importantly they're talking about participatory government, meaning that they'll listen, and do something about that. I feel that's the biggest change we're seeing. The group is a great place to ask a question, get feedback on a blog post or a new blog design, or get more informed about social media tools like Twitter. Need help deciding on a website look: Denver attorney Elizabeth Lewis asks group members for their opinions on two possible designs for her website and gets ample feedback. Who's using Twitter with your blog?: Buffalo insurance coverage attorney Roy Mura asks if and how group members are using Twitter in their blogging. Many have chimed in with examples here, using Twitter to direct traffic to their blog, increase their Internet profile and "as a placeholder for post ideas and cases I want to post about later." How would a law firm use Twitter?: An older post by Cincinnati real estate attorney Brad Kaplan gets some new attention as group members debate forms of internal and external communication for law firms. Go to LinkedIn to read more discussions, or to add your voice to the conversation. Kevin O'Keefe is the moderator of the Legal Blogging group on LinkedIn.?If you're already a member of the Legal Blogging group, join the discussions or start your own. I make a good income and I work in a professional environment, so maintaining a wardrobe is probably my second largest business expense (after commuting). But the kicker is, I’m not an “average” size. The few retail and online stores I’ve found which sell durable, lasting professional clothing are expensive. <strong> How do you save money on clothing when nothing in a thrift shop or consignment store will fit you?</strong> Am I stuck buying off the rack?</p></blockquote> <p>I am not an “average size” either, but I don’t work in a business environment so I don’t have the same concerns.  For my few “expensive” clothing purchases, I have turned to <a href="http://frugalhacks.com/2008/10/09/frugal-bra-shopping-for-the-not-so-average-woman/" target="_blank">buying one of an item “off the rack” so to speak, and then scouring the internet for deals on several more of the same identical item</a>. This worked for me for undergarments, but I somehow doubt you want 5 identical pairs of slacks. Maybe in different colors…</p> <p>So I turned to my M-Network friends for help, and this is what they had to say:</p> <p><strong>Patrick of <a href="http://www.cashmoneylife.com" target="_blank">Cash Money Life</a>:</strong></p> <p>When you are trying to <a href="http://cashmoneylife.com/2007/11/02/how-to-build-a-professional-wardrobe-on-a-budget/">build a professional wardrobe on a budget</a>, it is important to remember that you do not need designer clothing to look good.</p> <p>When I built my first professional wardrobe shortly after leaving the military, I focused on purchasing classic items such as solid color shirts and slacks. With classic cuts and colors you can mix and match to make several outfits. Avoid trendy clothing which can quickly go out of fashion.</p> <p>Finally, buy quality items and take care of them. Quality clothing looks better, fits better, and lasts longer. You should also take care of your items as well, including <a href="http://cashmoneylife.com/2007/06/27/polish-those-shoes/">polishing your shoes</a> and ironing your clothes. These will help them last longer and give people a better first impression.</p> <p><strong>Lynnae of <a href="http://www.beingfrugal.net" target="_blank">Being Frugal</a>:</strong></p> <p>You might be able to find some discounted, professional pieces of clothing at stores such as Ross, Marshall’s, or TJ Maxx. If you do buy off the rack, make sure you buy quality items in classic styles.</p> <p>The frugal option isn’t always the cheapest option initially. If you buy clothes that will last a long time and won’t go out of style, in the long run, you will save money.</p> <p><strong>Plonkee of <a href="http://www.plonkee.com" target="_blank">Plonkee Money</a>:</strong></p> <p>I am not an average size. I’m 5ft tall and US size 10-12 (too short for petite clothes and not exactly svelte). I have never found anything suitable second hand, not many people give away short and wide clothes.</p> <p>I’m in the UK, so I probably can’t help you out with specific shops to go to. My tactics to cut costs are to have very few suits (I now possess 3) and lots more plain solid colour tops in different weights. I wear the suits in heavy rotation and so am willing to spend a fair amount of money on them - I alter the sleeve and hem lengths to fit. With the suits, I find that I can wear fitted t-shirts and they look just as smart as buttoned shirts, but it’s easier to find cheaper plain and basic ones that fit well in discount stores. When I find a top that’s at a good price, and fits I buy several in different colours.</p> <p>If you’ve scoured all the second-hand shops in your area and can never find anything then I think you might be stuck buying off the rack. My only other suggestions are ebay and pricing up the cost of having a tailor make you up something. If you travel overseas at all, most large cities in Asia have areas where good tailors can copy an existing garment for a very reasonable price.</p> <p><strong>Glblguy of <a href="http://www.gatherlittlebylittle.com" target="_blank">Gather Little By Little</a
